Transmission Fluid on the Floor

This last spring I threw a rod in my 350. It was old and tired anyway, so I didn't shed many tears. I picked-up a used '81 350 that had just had a rering job and had a towing cam. Its a great engine, but that's not the big issue.

When I had the engine out I replaced the rear transmission seal on the TH 350. I know I should have done the front one too, but it isn't giving me grief. Recently when I was replacing the starter I had the front-end up on ramps for a couple of days. All the tranny fluid drained out the back of the transmission onto the floor.

Its a new seal and I'm really confident that it was installed correctly. Suggestions?

'68 C-10 R.I.P. - Dad's old truck...too far gone to resurrect.
'59 C-50 - with hoist. Truck is gone, wife isn't. Nuff said.

Just a guess but your yoke could be the culprit and the oil is coming out of the little weep hole in the yoke. If it does not leak otherwise, than I would not worry about it. When you have the tranny tipped up the pressure will cause oil to go out the splines and out the weep hole.

The transmission doesn't leak when its level, but if it is on any kind of an incline it does. I thought it might be a build-up of air pressure in the transmission combined with a plugged vent hole that caused it, but then it wouldn't happen if the trans is cold.

Can the weep hole be plugged?

You sure it came out of the tailshaft and not the speedo cable?

there is a welch plug on the back of the slipyolk that has the weep hole mentioned.....I mig welded the hole on the last leaker i had. Good luck,crazyL

I had an earlier encounter with the speedo cable and believe me, that is one tightly fastened speedo cable.

It ain't how tight you tighten it, it's how well the O-Ring seals it.
If you pull the "bullet", the gear comes out with it. The bullet has an O-ring in it that I don't think you can buy separately. You can buy a new bullet and speedo gear from a transmission supply house like Transtar (sp?). My gear shaft had a deep groove in it from many miles of use. That part doesn't leak a drop now. Now, if only I had the ambition to seal the front end of the damn thing. Aw heck, a bag of dry-sweep is still cheap...

Just thought I would let you guys know....Jegs sells brand new yokes for a turbo 350 for $45.00. They are manufactured by Strange. Got mine a few weeks ago. Nice quality.

You can over tighten when it comes to the o-ring and cause damage............

If it was the speedo gear would it make any difference if the truck was level or on an incline?

i just took my speedo gear outta the tranny when i too out the tranny the other day. Can i just put the gear back in and givér? i didnt see an o-ring when it came out. did i screw something up? sorry bout hijacking the thread.
