GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

These are N.O.S. GM part#14044819 tin valve covers (tall). They were sold in chrome or bare metal for painting. Most people bought the chrome, but I went with painted to do orange, blue bowtie with white Chevrolet and Power. But... never happened and they lay in a parts loft for 25-30 years. Moisture had gotten to them where they were, so the boxes got all soft and some rust flashed on them. They weren't pitted, just not so pretty with rust colored blotches all over them. They have been sand blasted with the outside primed and inside will get oiled if they don't sell too soon. These have never been set on a head or a bolt stuck through a hole so I consider them N.O.S. The sandblasting and priming would be a good thing even if fresh clean metal to assure a good paint bond, so one step past N.O.S. to make them better for painting. GM discontinued these and assigned the part# to the ones you probably saw that had Chevrolet and a bowtie, which have also since been discontinued.

So I've been searching the PN for a while and the closest I come is finding the ones that came after. Have yet to turn a picture or sale up on this type anywhere in my searches. So, no sales for reference. Going by what I see vintage speed stuff going for, especially quality valve covers, I have these priced at $200pr. I have the rubber plugs they came with and what's left of the boxes. These are something special for just the right special truck. You won't see these on anyone else's truck and they are genuine Chevrolet parts. If both my trucks weren't GMCs I'd use them

So, $200 postal money order if someone wants them. I'll pay shipping and ins.

Lots of eyeballs on these. So what do you think? Should I go ahead and paint? I figured someone would rather paint themselves. Maybe something different than what I have in mind.

If it were me I would do your paint plans but with black power. But that is just me! Very different though.

Re: GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

See? That's what I mean. You would want the Chevrolet different. Sometimes you can do too much to make a part nice. Example: I have two pairs of stock GM 5-lug wheels and a pair of wide factory 8-lug wheels for sale that I sandblasted and painted. That doubled the price and with adding shipping no one seems to want to spend that much. I had very little into them as they were and what I did doubled what I want for them. Those will need to be local sales now.

I know these ain't cheap, but they are rare, genuine GM, and pretty dang cool if you ask me. If they were chrome not so much IMO. Still as cool and rare but the result would be just another pair of chrome valve covers with a little something different stamped in them. Painted they will look stock except not. I'm sure they will be good conversation pieces. I really like them but I have a thing about not wanting bowties or Chevy on my GMCs. But I may end up with a Chevy later on, so my price is a gotta love them as much as I do price because I don't mind keeping them for later. And, looking around at what vintage speed equipment goes for these are in line with what I've seen on other (more common) valve covers. Has anyone seen these before? I just thought I'd offer them up since I just did finally sandblast them. I don't want to oil the insides until after painting, unless I decide to store in primer. If I had Glycol I'd go ahead and use that now.

Re: GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

I don't see any provisions for oil baffles at the ports. Would one have to weld in a set of stock baffles?

The gasket retainers at the ends are a nice touch though. But looks like one is missing.

Re: GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

Good points. I didn't notice one VC only has one of those. Interesting since they are both straight out of the boxes from when I ordered them years ago. Doesn't appear to have ever had that piece. On the baffles, only thing I can say is GM must have figured they weren't needed. I've run aftermarket covers without them with no issues. But this gives me a reason to leave unpainted in case someone feels they need to weld something in. If I end up using them I'm not worried about baffles.

Re: GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

I had a chrome pair from the 80's. No baffles, used a lot of oil. They did not have the Chevrolet name in the bowtie though. The oil mist would get into the carb based where the hose from the pcv valve was routed too.

Re: GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

I thought baffles were to prevent oil from "blowing" out, not sucking. What do you mean by it sucked oil? Oil is pumped to the tops of heads and gravity drains back to crankcase. Was the oil sucked back to the crankcase?

Like I said, I have never had non-baffled valve cover issues. No more oil seepage than with them. All motors let oil seep some or they would always stay clean. Not sure what the purpose of these comments on the baffles is other than deter people from wanting these. I am offering these to my fellow members as a helpful thing. That's why I showed the back side. I checked on Ebay and most listings don't show the back side or mention baffles or not. Some have them, some don't. I go by if they needed baffles then GM would have put them in. Just trying to sell these parts. We could start a thread on valve cover baffles where it belongs if there's a need for that discussion.

Yes. They are 3 5/8" with tape hooked on the lip. So, slightly less off of the head... a hair over 3 1/2".

What do you think, should I paint them up orange with the bow tie and Chevy Powered detailed?

Re: GM "Chevy Power" Tin Valve Covers-SBC

I'll drop these to $150 for a while. If they don't sell too soon I'll go ahead and do what I originally intended with paint/detailing.
