EGR BLeed solenoid?

since omitting the EGR valve on my 86 C10, i'd assume that i no longer need the EGR bleed solenoid, is that correct? im planning on using my stock TCC lockup wiring for the time being. do i just need to tuck the connector away and leave it as it is? or do i need to splice the wires together for the TCC to work properly?

I messed the the solenoid and related wiring on mine. I never could figure out what exactly I needed to do. I'm not the best on wiring anyway. I finally gave up and rewired my tranny.

I have asked some of the best mechanics there is, and none could tell me exactly what the solenoid does in relation to the tranny. I know it's got something to do with what gear the EGR works in is all I know.

Tim mentioned something to me last night about the EGR not being able to work while the TCC is locked. i'm not sure why that is, but i seem toremember hearing it somewhere before. now i just need to know if the switch is open or closed for the TCC to lock.

Jeff, I don't have a EGR bleed solenoid on mine either. I hooked my EGR straight to the EGR port on my 1904. It's the same port as on a regular Q-jet. If you are looking the front of the carb, it's the one on the very bottom, far left.

I will have to check tomorrow to see if it's ported or manifold vacuum. I know you have a Edelbrock square bore carb and not a Q-jet.

After thinking about this a little, I remember talking with Bowtie Ollie over at CT about this a very long time ago. He didn't know much more about than I did, but he thought the solenoid may bleed off a little of the EGR when in OD. His thinking about this was it may help from leaning it out and maybe causing surging while the tranny is locked in 4th.

My thinking on this is it was GM's way of making these piece of crap 305's run smoother and not ping. We all know they are spark knock prone anyway. I'm guessing they did this because if you delute the fuel mixture, it burns leaner and thus will cause more pinging. I may be way off base here, but you know what, I don't have a 305 so I don't need to worry about all the quirks that came with them.

Anyway, I'm figuring about the most you may have to do is richen up the cruise range a tad to overcome the EGR. I do know for a fact you can run more vacuum advance with a EGR than you can without one, so maybe my thinking above don't hold any water. Anyway, you already have a lockup kit installed so it won't bother you except maybe, and I repeat maybe, having to richen it up a tad and your timing. I know for a fact also, it's much tougher to tune for power and mileage with this emission crap. It's very possible because I've done it, but it's not as much fun.

On second thought, I'm almost positive the EGR hooks to ported vacuum. If it didn't the EGR would work at idle. The EGR is only supposed to work above idle.

The EGR hooks up to a ported terminal infront of your Carb. There will be one hose with a check valve on it, and another longer one with nothing on it, that hose attaches to the EGR unit, at least in my case.
