Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

Been scratching my head for something to stand on that won't slip while leaning over the fender of a truck or over the the radiator.
You guys must some have some innovative ideas. Please share.

Re: Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

I use this adjustable step on my 4 wheel drive trucks and a couple of old pallets work in front of them.

Re: Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

I bought one of these several years ago. It seems well built, is sturdy and has non-skid feet. Just bought another. They are usually under $20 with a "Super Coupon".

I've got an old, smaller step ladder with rubber feet that I use.

Re: Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

I have a 16-20" tall plastic tool chest/step thing. Its an old one, I can't find it online anymore. This is the closest i could find (mine looks a lot sturdier)

I'm 5'8 and can't do jack squat under the hood of my 2015 Z71 without it. I can barely reach the dipstick to check the oil without standing on something. Makes me miss my 2000 Z71 a bit more...

Re: Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

Depends on how long you going to be there. I was replacing the intake on my driver and I pulled the front tires and wheels and let it down to where the rotors were about 1/2" off the ground.

Done this a bunch of times!

When that doesn't cut it, I steal my wife's step stool from the kitchen!

If you use it right, it'll work fine, but get off balance just enough, and you are dead.

I doubt that any of the warning labels advised against using that way

Re: Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

Some great ideas here. But wholly cow harpo231. I've done similar, but not that. At my age, not a chance.

A nearby shop has what looks like a diving board. They have a mechanic that's maybe a buck 25. He hovers over any part of an engine compartment. I'll probably use them for the first start on my restoration.

Re: Ideas for what to stand on when working on a truck

I've used old metal milk crates and 5 gallon buckets. I love that diving board! Given that I don't work on vehicles for a living, I won't be buying one, though. That guy in the stair well is taking his life in his hands, and potentially anyone walking underneath, if it slips. That's just stupid to do.

I use a 2' wooden step ladder that I have had for 30 years.

I have a wooden stool I threw together for just one step up or I grab a 2' or 4' step ladder. The stool doubles as something to sit on when doing brakes, etc
