'Dumbo' mirror source?

At some point in my truck's history, a previous owner installed the dumbo mirrors from a 1980's van. The mirrors do not LOOK much different than stock, but unfortunately, it means that the vent mirrors will not open fully, because of the bend in the neck of the mirror arm. Don't get me started on the fact that they moved the mirror down and back a bit, and drilled new holes (so now I have 6 holes on the door)!

I need to find a pair of mirrors to replace the dumb ones that the previous owner installed. I would LOVE to get some OEM mirrors, but eBay only comes up with scratched up / dented mirrors. Not to mention the shipping is crazy high. I looked at aftermarket, but cringe at putting on Doorman brand mirrors.

Does anyone have a source for a mirror that is actually stainless, and won't end up rusting after 60 days being installed... and will install in the stock location. Looking to spend about $50, give or take, shipped.

I don’t believe they still make OEM dumbo mirrors. Any of the truck sites will have them though. I got a pair and love them. Just can’t remember which place I got them from.

This is the only close up pic I have. It was more of a pic for my vent windows. But the mirrors are very nice!!

Re: 'Dumbo' mirror source?

Thanks guys. I knew that LMC carried this style but didn’t know they had it in stainless much less that they appear to be of higher quality! I better get these on my Christmas list ASAP! Not being able to open the vent mirrors is annoying the hell out of me!

Opening the vent windows is the tits. At least in theory it is, until the driver side falls out of the frame going down the road and you manage to catch it by way of the lord's grace and previously unbeknownst cat like reflexes. Probably.

Re: 'Dumbo' mirror source?

Don't overlook the salvage yards. I found a near pristine set of dumbos a while back and paid something like $10 each. Got them as spares for when the Pep Boys dumbo mirrors currently on my truck finally give up the ghost. May be a while, they are at least 20 years old.

Unrelated to the thread, but your info says you're from OKC and I always see you talking about hitting the salvage yards for parts. I've only found a couple squares at Pull-a-Part and they basically picked over shells. No luck at LKQ either. Where are you finding this stuff?

Do a parts search on http://www.car-part.com. This place found Salvage Yards local to me, I never knew existed. Just went to one today, to get a bench seat & seat belts.

Persistence and patience plays a part. Some trips I find no squares or picked over shells and the trip is over 20 minutes after entering the yard. Other trips, there will be several fresh trucks. It is a rare trip that I completely fill my want list. OTOH, I have found things I wasn't looking for that I grabbed for future use - example: a near pristine radiator core support was just sitting on the end of a picked over frame, about 8 bolts later it was mine for $30 and no shipping.

Also realize that many parts from other GM vehicles will fit these trucks. Got a 12SI alt from a FWD Buick. Steering wheel from a Blazer. THERMAC parts from some GM car - didn't even bother to check which kind. Roof mounted rear view mirror from a Chevy Spectrum(guessing a rebadged import).

Re: 'Dumbo' mirror source?

Indeed. My truck hasn't needed much so far, so I'll admit it isn't ever priority one when at the yard. Just gotta keep my eyes open. Noted.
