Can you make a step bumper out of a step bumper?

Specifically, can you make a rear stepside step bumper out of a rear fleetside step bumper? My truck is a 1972 Chevy.

I read on here the fleetside step bumpers are wider than the stepside step bumpers so I assume one could....has anyone done so?

Some one with welding talent could do it. That's not me. Easier to ''shrink down'' a fleetside rear bumper than build up a stepside one to full size.
Stepside step bumers have a little wrap-around, under the taillight area, that's cut off on the fleetside types. Could be built up or ignored.
I have a dealer-added stepside rear step bumper. SAF-T-BUMPER [tm] If you want the dimensions, I'll get out a tape and spec it. Just not right now, it's 3 AM.

Sure, you could cut one down. If you want correct, the '72 step bumper is one year-only and hard to find not twisted or damaged. They were stamped, same as those that followed. The years prior were much stronger being made from c-channel stock. Those would be easier to narrow as well, being heavy steel

Heavier is better...with all the cell phone addicts texting our lives away, I want my truck to shrug off the impact of their plastic cars.

No hurry on making a step bumper, thanks for the offer of measuring though. It would be next summer at the earliest, I have to get the garage cleaned out and wired for 220 before I can get a welder.
