Wheel bearing replacement

Hi guys,

I would like to replace my wheel bearings and buy them on rockauto.

But too many pieces, I just don’t which one fits.

I own a 1972 super camper cheyenne with dana 60, if one of you has already bought bearings and can tell which ones are good, it will help a lot.

Thanks and have a great day

Re: Wheel bearing replacement

I would buy them at the local parts store personally and ask for Spicer bearings. Napa found mine pretty quickly and haven't had a problem for the past 2 years. I believe I went with Spicer per a board members reccomendation because they are usa made and original to your unit.

Re: Wheel bearing replacement

Ok thanks,

I’ll try with Napa next time I’ll visit US or try to find Spicer bearings on the net.

Re: Wheel bearing replacement

Anyone know if Federal Mogul wheel bearings and seals are still US made? They are under the "National" wheel bearing parts group, but made by Fed Mog. Their HQ is still in the US, but they have major hubs in China and Mexico.... Just wondering if an old reliable standard is or isn't as good as it used to be.

EDIT: I did find a little more - they have manufacturing sites in 14 countries, US included. The biggest mfgrs are:
US - 5 cities
China - 3 cities
South Africa - 3 cities
Mexico - 6 cities

So, I think my answer (to myself) would be, I just don't know if I'm getting the same quality part I would have gotten in 1972. Maybe.
So, yeah, I'd try to get spice or US parts when it comes to this kind of stuff. I've been frustrated with replacement wear/consumable parts on my newer truck (2001) and the low quality. My first pitman arm from the factory lasted about 15 years. Same for ball joints. The next 3 of each haven't...

Re: Wheel bearing replacement

These are fairly expensive bearings as far as automotive bearing go.
However this guy has two Timken for Appx $12 each.

You can find most of them on Ebay. Many are older USA made.

They purchase spares and they sit on the shelf till the company is closed down and moved to China. /s

Re: Wheel bearing replacement

Don't forget new seals also. You may also need new races for the bearings. It's a job driving out and back in the new races. Do yourself a favor and pick up a bearing race driver set, either a loan tool or buy it. Watch a couple of videos on YouTube. I ended up grinding down a old race to use as a driver for the new ones

Last time I bought Timken bearings for my car, there was a note on the inside of the box stating the bearings were made in China. The box said Made in USA. Needless to say, they went back.

Re: Wheel bearing replacement

What works really slick for removing races is an air hammer and a round tip/bit. You hit one side and the bearing shoots out of there. All logic says it will cock in the bore and you will have a mess. Just doesn't work out that way. Give it a try. It's amazing.
