WTB: 6 cylinder tach gauge or cluster

Might be a long shot but I'm looking to buy a factory 6 cylinder tach gauge or full cluster including the tach. Please let me know if you have one. Thanks!

Re: WTB: 6 cylinder tach gauge or cluster

Something about the different connections make the rpms show differently on the tach if the engine doesn't correspond with its intended style connection. And apparently they can't be retrofitted to work in the other's environment. Stuff i don't fully grasp but that's what i've gathered.

And I thought you sold that one.

Re: WTB: 6 cylinder tach gauge or cluster

The difference is pulses per revolution. This is why a 6 cyl tach reads different than it should when hooked to a V8 engine and the opposite. The circuitry and resistors in the tach are what change the received pulse rate from the ignition coil.

Hope this helps,
Tom

Thanks, Tom. I knew you'd know and likely weigh in.

Hey, Tim. I'm not sure there is a difference in the rpms, but I could be wrong. I think the only way to tell without tearing it open is to look for the 8CYL or 6CYL. All the ones I've seen look exactly the same from the front.

The V-8 and 6 cyl tachs are all 5k rpms. The only way to tell the difference is by the part number or stamp on the back, or hook it up and see what it reads.
4k tachs are mechanical and found in diesels.

I can't remember if the 6 cyl reads high or low in a V-8 truck. The one in my '72 Dually reads high and I'm wondering if it is a 6 cyl tach. I am going to swap it out with a known V-8 one and see what happens. I can put the one from the Dually in the Green '67 I6 250 truck and check it out.....
