How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
Upon further inspection, the freeze plug appears to have a crack in it, not leaking where it mates to the crank case. So, going to remove this plug(had planned to do this anyway)and replace. Question is, how difficult is it to do this?

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
I usually push in one side, then grab it with needle nose pliers finish pushing it in then pull it out, just so it doesn't drop out of sight, have had good luck that way,but others may do it differently!

It's in the engine and drive-train forum section - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=435786

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
Drill a screw into it, grab screw with vise grips, tap one side to dislodge, extract.

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
I usually knock them inwards and get nit a little sideways. Then grab it with a pair of vise grips and leverage it against the block to pull the freeze plug out thru the hole.

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
Thanks to all for the replies. I checked out a few YouTube videos and, it looks like it shouldn't be real difficult to remove and replace.

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
I attempted to remove the freeze plug. On the 2nd wack with the hammer, the entire back of the plug popped off and fell into the block and, I was unable to retrieve it. I was able to remove the round piece of it without problems. So now what do I do? Can the flat piece remain in there without causing problems? I posted couple pics of the round part of the plug although they are kinda hard to see.

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
It likely won’t hurt anything or go far. Go fishing with a coat hook.
Over the years I’ve found several pieces of them in water jackets when I had to replace a block heater. |

Re: How difficult to remove and install new freeze plug
Agree. Probably won't hurt a thing. Have actually seen a few engines where someone pushed every single plug in instead of extracting them. Characteristic "tink tink" when rolling the block on the engine stand.
To state the obvious ... clean that hole well with sandpaper before install.
