Velocity junky
On a recent episode of Garage Squad, they were working on a 2 door 55 Chevy. They needed a new rear end and opted for one out of a late model Ford SUV, a couple of reasons they selected it was 1. It was a posi 2. Factory disc brakes. I considered a late model GM SUV or pickup axle but heard they were a couple inches wider?
My frame is from a 1972 GMC and has leaf springs, I did an axle flip on the stock axle, it’s not a posi and the ratio is pretty high. Questions 1. What have you guys and or girls used? 2. Does anyone know if the width on the Ford SUV rear axle? Thanks in advance for your answer(s) |

Re: Velocity junky
Probably an 8.8 Explorer axle. They are pretty narrow. Limited slip and disc brakes are commonly seen.

Re: Velocity junky
I'd just rebuild the stock one you have in there now. new posi-traction and lower gears.
The later model (1990's) 1/2 ton Chevy and GMC's had a 14 bolt with a smaller ring gear in them (9.5" I believe). Not a bad axle, but they usually came with a Gov-loc if the had a traction aid installed in them. No idea what their width is though. I had a 1994 GMC K1500 that had one in it and I liked it. Gary
