Talking 4x4 manual transmission options

What are some of the options for a manual transmission for my 72 K10? The truck currently has a th350 in it. I would prefer an overdrive trans but not a deal breaker. I have 35's on it and plan to take it off-road here and there.

Thanks

Re: 4x4 manual transmission options

Nv4500 for overdrive or the sm465 which could have came stock in these which is a 4spd.

Re: 4x4 manual transmission options

Keeping the stock gearing with the 35s may not need an overdrive

Thank you! For the sm465 are there differences between a 2wd or 4wd trans? Would I need an adapter to bolt up to my np205?

Exactly what I was gonna say. All of the following is assuming you’ve got a stock drive train with th350 and np 205 transfer case.
The transfer case it’s self is the same in that it is a small input bearing case(non turbo 400, 85+sm465) the input shaft on the np205 will have to be changed out to a coarse 10 spline Input and you’ll need a 4x4 sm465, the 465 to 205 adaptor, and the 10 spline collar to join the transmission main shaft to the 205 input shaft. You’ll also have to make sure you gather the correct years parts for the case you have. From 69-84(?)ish (don’t remember 100% the cut off year) the 205 cases use a race track type adaptor mount pattern 85(?)-91 use the round pattern 205 and a different sm465 main shaft and 205 input shaft. So in a nutshell 84 ish down 4x4 465 with adaptor and corresponding 205 input shaft and 10 spline collar is what you’d need. Clear as mud right?
If it were me I’d try to find the trans and transfer case together from the same truck. Takes the guess work out of it if your not sure what exactly is needed.
Edti: however you can buy everything from http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog.htm to make your th350 205 case work with a 4x4 84 down 465.

Sounds like 57taskforce has gone down the road your contemplating and that should make it easier for you. But just in case your like me and are interested in more knowledge here is a link to Novak's tranny pages to give you a good comparison of trannys. Plus they are good people to work with.

Re: 4x4 manual transmission options

I would think with 35" tires you want to change axle ratios. Wasn't a 3.07 standard with V8-auto?

Do you know what final drive ratio you have?

No clue yet. I just got the truck last week. The trans has no reverse or third. Haven't had a lot of time to mess with it.

Re: 4x4 manual transmission options

NP 435 Close Ratio is a very nice 4 Spd. (see it on the link above posted by HO455). The SM 465 is good for getting a large trailer moving on a hill with that deep 1st gear, but I prefer my NP435's ratios and it shifts with a short throw and very smoothly.
Ratios are; 1st...4.56, 2nd...2.28, 3d...1.31, 4th...1-1 direct. -BA

Re: 4x4 manual transmission options

The TH350 auto trans you have now means you most likely have the 3.08 highway gearing in your axles. If you are running 35" tires, a 4.10 ratio is perfect without overdrive, unless you want to cruise at 75+ mph. I ran the SM465/NP205 combo with 35" tires for years with 4.10 gearing and was very happy. I do tow loaded car trailers and my 27' boat, so the extra low first gear is great for getting moving on hills. I since found a Gear Vendors overdrive unit in a junk yard and bolted it to the back of the NP205, so now I can split gears and cruise at high speeds. But having the overdrive is not necessary, more of a luxury.

Re: 4x4 manual transmission options

I found this trans locally. Does this look like an sm465? Guy dosent know much about it. He does have the bell housing as well. I just don't know very much about these old transmissions.
