Rear end swap
1970 c10
350 cu 350 auto Truck currently has 12 bolt non posi rear end. Was converted to 5 lug by PO Got a chance to pick up. 10 bolt 8.5" posi from a '72. Has axles but missing drums. Should be a direct swap right for both rear end and used my old drums? Anyone done this have any info or tips. Thanks Mark

Re: Rear end swap
1972? A 10 bolt would have come out of a car, right?
Sorry but I don't know the answer. While GM was pretty good at interchangeability but I don't know about this application. GM did switch to 10 bolt axles in trucks sometime around 1980. It was considered a downgrade in strength.

Re: Rear end swap
Realistically, the 8.5" 10 bolt and the 12 bolt are equal in strength. Certainly by the late 80's when they went to equal size 30 spline axles.
But to BigDav's point, they weren't found in trucks until the '79-'81 era and they were still using 12 bolts in some models. It would better serve you to just add an LSD to your existing 12 bolt IMO. The 8.5" posi from a passenger car was an excellent unit, but trucks always got the Gov-Bomb so make sure you know what you are getting. Big cars were same bolt pattern as truck, but Camaro/Chevelle/Nova was smaller. Caveat Emptor...

Re: Rear end swap
Thanks for the info. The seller send me a pic and I noticed it didn't have a hole for the track bar. I'll be passing on it and I'll install an Eaton posi into my exsisting 12 bolt.
Thanks again Mark

Re: Rear end swap
A stock "10 bolt" out of a 1972 will be an Eaton or a Dana... both 8 luggers. It doesn't have a track bar because it is probably leaf sprung.
