LT1 or LS1?

i am debating whether to put a LT1 or LS1 motor in my truck. i will be driving the truck everyday so i want a motor that will be reliable yet still have good power without sacrificing gas mileage. What do you guys think, give me your pros/cons on both motors.

Your friend is probably right. Aluminum block, heads..etc. I had an 01 Z/28 LS-1 Six Speed. It really moved and ran great. Can't say on reliability....Car had 12,000 miles when I traded it in.

I can get you two different complete LT1's..one that runs but needs rebuilding along with computer and 4l60 out of a 94 9C1 police car....

another LT1 with 90k in great running condition.....I think the first motor with tranny is available for about $1000

The second is probably 800-900....

if you are interested I will double check availability and pricing.

Lt1 will definately be cheaper. But look at my sig for my pick. Yes you can only go .010 clean up on the bores but a new block can be had for $550.00. I'm going back and forth over a stroked 346 or bored/stroked 6.0 block. The 6.0 block which is iron adds 90 lbs. Plenty of 600-700hp aluminum set ups. Stoker set ups for LS1's are expensive yet but prices are really starting to come down. Accell has the Gen VII DFI and some new intakes are on there way out. Mezeire recently came out with a street version of their electric water pump also. Cam packages coming out all the time. There's F body guys with 383 to 427ci motors still getting over 20mpg with the 6 speed.

miket- i will have to pass on your motors. a guy has a 94 impala SS motor with 42k original miles complete with a rebuilt 4l60e for $2200. i am also looking at a few LS1 motors on ebay that seem to be decent deals.

68LSS1- i am not looking for that kind of power. i just want a good reliable motor that will put out between 260-350hp but will last me 40k miles.

No problem. 290-310rwhp stock. Free mods and cam/headers should be easy 350rwhp without affecting any driveability.

My buddy is dipping into the 10's with an ls-1 in his 00' ss..... It's got a stock bottom end but that's about it. Oh and a 200hp shot of nitrous. Man that thing will fly! It would be expensive but I think a stock ls-1 would be a great motor for one of our trucks. I don't have that much money though!

It depends on your budget. If you want the best deal, do an LT-1. If you can afford it, go with an LS1. Be forwarned, the LS1 conversion is a LOT more expensive.

You ever see an LT1 look this good-

I'd go with the LS1. Lots of power. I got into the 12s with my car with a few bolt ons.

The problem I see with the LT1 is the optispark. Seems unreliable to me.

I've thought about putting a 5.3L into my truck lately. I figure it would be a lot cheaper than an LS1 since there are probably 100 5.3L for every LS1 made. The 5.3L shares a lot with the LS1 and can accept most of the same bolts ons and can make good power.

LT1 is cheaper....readily available and will make 260 stock and whatever hp you want based on your budget. Yes you need to put a new optispark in when you install the motor....after that, you shouldn't have a problem.

My 9C1 has 176k....no problems....My SS that I sold had 145K...no problems....and my Caprice ...well I drove that to 205k with no major problems....none of these have required an optispark yet.

smokin: Motors...no prob....thought I would let you know and good luck.

Cold air induction, good headers, good pcm programming, after market roller rockers...

Actually Summit sells acomplete LT4 kit for about $2800...thats an option...Nitrous is an option....in moderation of course...and always the vortech supercharger....

BTW with 330 lb/ft of torque and roughly 4500lbs, I can roast em through second gear with 3.08's.....

That does seem like a good deal....A good place to start for ideas on modding that motor is here or any other LT1 car forum....combination motorsports does alot of LT1 building....that might be a good resource....I will probably have them build my 396 LT1 when I get rich.

miket heres my pan of attack: headers, good exhaust system, Tb bypass, intake, and maybe reprogramming, but in order to do that i need to get like a Hypertech Power Programmer right? What do you think the total cost would be if i bought that SS motor and all those mods, and everything installed on my truck, assuming i do all the work myself?

Smokin:

I honestly don't know about the money part of your question. Most of those mods are do it yourselfers.....headers no idea on cost but someone on this board can give you an idea...a good exhaust system might run you anywhere from $250-$600 depending on where you go.

Where are you in CO? We should try and find you some LT1 support near you who can program that PCM so you don't have to purchase the programmer....If I may suggest....you may want to join the ImpalaSS forum or an LT1 forum and find someone knowledgeable around you who has done programming and is reputable.

If you would like I am happy to put another post up on the SS forum to find someone in CO for you......just let me know.

I also know there are a few folks on this baord who have done this swap before.....may want to put a psot up to find em.

good luck.......you are in the best place right now for guidance and answers....
