truck tilt column worth?

A local yard has a '71-72 truck with a tilt column. What is the value on one of these before I call?

Man, I can't imagine having a tilt in my truck. The steering wheel is so darn big I can barely put my legs under it as it is! So what do you guys do? Swap to a smaller steering wheel?

They want $200. I think I'd rather pay another $200 and get a billet unit.

yeah that seems pretty high for a junkyard unit
the reason for having a tilt is some people with lets just say ample stomach proportions can tilt it up and still use the stock wheel

Yeah, I guess I'll stick with my non-tilt one unless I gain a couple of hundred pounds before I'm done.

I'm no skinny guy, but a little extra room would be nice. I'm seriously considering a different wheel (although I hate to ruin the all-original look of the interior).

You can get a tilt collum out of a chevy van much cheaper......and it will bolt in with minimal mods

There have been alot of posts on this....since the search function is working, search for something like "van tilt collumn" and you should find the info you need

One of the better mods I've done on my truck so far. Van tilts don't come with a steering arm, at least mine didn't. So you have to use the one off your stock column and it has to be shortened about 4". Just drill out the nylon plugs and hammer it in until its the right length. The wiring harness coupler is a different shape, van tilt is halfmoon while stock is flat (or vice versa? I forget). Supposedly there is an adapter out there. I asked at my local GM dealer and the guy looked at me like I had two heads. "Why would you want to do that?" What a dotard. . Anyway, I opted to take the whole works apart and transfer all my old wiring into the van tilt. I think the neutral safety switch has to be relocated as well because the brake pedal arm hits it when aplying brakes. There are ways around that one. I just cut about 3/4" off the end of the switch with a hacksaw. Yes, I literally cut corners when I can. Works like a charm!

Ahhhhhhhhh. The $400.00 billet steering column. I've gone that route. Don't forget to figure in the cost of the polished stainless double D shaft and the vibration isolation rag joint. It adds about another $200 + dollars on to the final cost. They sure are nice though.
