Coolant temp sensor placement

I just installed my aluminum radiator and I have the probe style sensor. I’m not too thrilled about stabbing thought the fins of my new radiator. Is there another option? I can’t use the location on the heads because the headers. They melt everything in thier vicinity. Should I just suck it up and plunge it through the upper hose inlet? Thanks in advance.

Re: Coolant temp sensor placement

Since you said headers (plural), I'll guess V8. If so, put it in the intake. However, if you use one of the head ports, the sensor and the wiring will be fine with protection.

Question Re: Coolant temp sensor placement

Have you considered tee'ing it into the heater hose*(one flowing INTO heater core?) Seems like it should be at least approximately the same temp as that from radiator. To see how close, check both with infra-red temp tester.

Re: Coolant temp sensor placement

Thanks for the reply’s, I’ll update this weekend. I have mad push on my job site so I’m working about 15 hours a day this week and have no time to tinker.. I’ll most likely go the water pump route. Thanks again.

Isnt there a port in the head for a temp sensor? Pipe threads? I think there is.

He said he can't go that route.

I'd have to question that, maybe he doesn't "want to". I can buy that.

Re: Coolant temp sensor placement

You can go that route, you just need to insulate the sensor and the wiring. Coating those headers will help, too. My headers are coated, and I use an insulation sleeve on my temp sender. No melting, no burning.

Headers are coated, they’re just from ‘97. I have a new set/style for my summer rebuild. I’m going to do the water pump tie in.

Re: Coolant temp sensor placement

This is similar to what I've used in the past on some blown, street driven applications. I used to have to fabricate these myself, but it looks like there are cooling system vendors mass producing these now. This one is from Flexalite that splices into the upper radiator hose.
