1971 2wd Chevy blazer build
Hello Everyone on 67-72 chevytrucks
So I was able to get a real 2wd chevy blazer Its a 1971 So this is my plan. Tear it all down and start fresh. Meaning remove all the old paint, body seal, Rust etc And I have no plans at all to modify the body in any way other than remove the quarter panel marker lights. But I could also leave them. not a real big issue for me. Oh yes I dont like the rain gutters. So I will be removing them. Sorry for any typos And Im open to any ideas any of you may have or suggestions. And if you need me to take a picture to help you in any way just ask me. Give me a couple of days. So I tore it all down to get it ready for sandblasting. Both driver and passenger side rockers were rusty. I also noticed the windshield top header bow was rusty...I drilled out the spot welds and opened it up and yes it was pretty rusty inside. So I sent that to get sand blasted as well What I plan on doing to it is this 20s up front 22s in the back<----- front and rear can change as far as size. This is one of the many areas I may be asking for input from all of you...I dont want to modify the body at all I guess I should stop talking and upload photo's |

Re: 1971 2wd Chevy blazer build
Ok as most of you have seen, the driver side quarter panel was done poorly..
So I went online an ordered a new one.. 900.00 is a lot of money I wanted to use that money for something else. A sandwich, cookies and a few more cookies. But I did start this build thread wrong, at least a little bit I purchased this blazer on Craigslist last month . I always wanted a blazer since I was Very young. So I found one years later.. A bit rougher than I wanted but I didnt want or could even afford one already done for me. I had No plans to tear it down like this but I should have seen that coming...rust here and there just really got to me. so I made up my mind to remove everthing that I could and work on it when I can and Ask for Help from anyone that could offer it to me when needed. |

Re: 1971 2wd Chevy blazer build
So I got my blazer back today from powder coating...
The body went for the ride with the chassis because they were both sand blasted at the same time.rain kept me from getting it sooner. Also this week My Heidts IFS came in and I sent that to get powder coated...for those of you that dont know it comes non painted raw metal. As you can see in the pictures its powder coated now I chose a color pretty close to fire engine red...my camera phone setting was set different so the color looks orange..its red.. And the chassis is grey....it looks really good in person |

Re: 1971 2wd Chevy blazer build
I don't know if you've done this kind of work before or not, but it makes me cringe when I see a Blazer tub off the frame without any kind of bracing done to it, especially one with any amount of rust. Being as you have the rocker panels removed too, this thing is probably trying to fold in on its self. Not trying to be a dick, just letting you know. Even a non rusty one will move more than you think. So, before you start welding in panels on this thing, you need to get the header panel welded back in, get it back on the frame and put the top on it to make sure everything is going to line up properly. There would be nothing worse than putting a new bed side and rockers on it only to find out that the top wont fit. Don't rely on just the fact that you make the doors fit, because they can be made to fit even when the top wont. Good luck with the build.

Re: 1971 2wd Chevy blazer build
At minimum to get everything lined up - replace the body mounts/bolts since the originals are likely shot and install the top to assure you are close to a factory reference point before you start welding in metal. Some people have had to use spreader bars to get the door openings to line up after they dismantle the tub. |

Re: 1971 2wd Chevy blazer build
Thank You Ls1nova71 and Iks dcv1 for the heads up..
I did think about putting the top on the blazer before welding in the new quarter panel and also about the body possibly flexing. Other than the windshield bow and rockers this Blazer is Solid I have 2 tops. One is really nice condition. I have to wait couple more weeks to get the nice one from my other blazer.. Yes I know, Im building 2 blazers at the same time..just doing one post only for this blazer and not the other one....I dont want to come off as a Guy with tons of money, a show off Because I dont have it like that, ..its a long story but my divorce has been very difficult So Im staying busy with work and my Blazers and other projects.. Yes Other projects too. 20 years back I would have been the guy that knows everything. Now I ask until I get the feedback or help etc that I need. |
