Theres a 1970 C10 shortbed near me that I came across and I've been trying to think of a good sold and fair number to offer on it. 1970 Short fleet with 51,000 actual miles, 283 four speed, bought new by the city, pretty plain jane. But they want to know what I think its worth and what i would offer to buy it. Id like to own it, just not sure with its lack of options what to offer..My emotional side is probably way too high so I am bringing it to the experts. Runs and drives good title etc. let me know what you think.

not expert by ant stretch but I agree with projectking, leaning toward 5k but if theres no rust at all 6k.

If its a small town, without the red tape bidding process. I bring in 2700.00 cash in one pocket and 300.00 in another pocket. Money talks. 283 didnt come in 1970, but that still is a good motor to keep.

Based on pics alone, I'd have to agree, 4.5K-7K depending on part of the country. BUT, if the city is selling it AND they are asking you what it's worth... sounds like an invitation to low-ball. I'm with Myoldtruck on the offer price, but I might have $2300 in my pocket rather than $300 if you really want it. If you offer $2700, they may think the are swindling you if they counter off at $3700.

Sounds like a good opportunity. I'd want to know which 4-speed is in it - since the engine has been changed out. I'm guessing a car 4-speed judging by stick position. Personally, I'd start at $2000 and see what happens - just have cash for your personal limit handy.

Someone had also moved the shifter to the floor. I'd bet it's a 3 spd trans that had a column shifter. Looks like a pretty solid truck though. I'm by no means a expert on values, but to me 3 to maybe 4K probably isn't too far off.

Agreed 4-6k. Just depends on the area. If it's super solid, maybe more.. and it just depends how bad you want it.

Offer a $1,000.00 and they will come off the price they were thinking already, it's the oldest sales trick in the book having the buyer set the price when the seller doesn't want to shortcut himself out of potential profit .

Seller what ? I was thinking maybe $1,500.00 , Now you know where your at rather than walking up and offering $4,500.00 foolishly .

I agree with this. usually city state or county vehicles sell cheap. they are not car dealers looking to make a profit.

Everything's relative. Maybe 10K is no big deal for you, maybe its worth 5 and you really want it, then who cares? Maybe they looked it up in KBB and decided it was worth 20K? I'd offer 2500 and see where they're at. Cars are strictly worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

Sometimes is just speaks to you and you just want it and that's cool too.

The truck is worth $4k-$6k all day long on the market and would sell for that with even a reasonable bit of sales effort.
So from that you have to develop your strategy.
You have to act fast tho'....the longer it lingers and the more they 'talk' about it, the more the price is going to go up or someone is going to step in with real money and take it.
I wouldn't putz around with 'lowball' offers....and I don't want people to have to walk away (and talk) and think about it because it seems low.
Make sure you deal with someone there who has the final say in it....and go in with the cash on you and assert that you can have it out of there today.
I would also 'hint' at a $100 finders fee for the guy who greenlights it quickly....noting that if it is a municipal arrangement and process, a little extra pocket cash for the administrator can help things along.
Personally I wouldn't start any offer below $2500 on that truck because of the reasons I just listed.

Even if the mileage is low, if it was owned by a municipality it has idled for 8 hours a day for decades. I guarantee it.
Still worth $4.5-7K.

Double agree. I think it's a 6K truck as well before reading everyone's posts.

However, as mentioned, as a state vehicle, they've got their money's worth out of it and just want it gone now. I'd offer $1,500 and you'll probably end up around $2,500-3K.

Now if they put it on one of those auction sites that sells state stuff... gloves are off.

used city equipment sells for pennies on the dollar. they look at it as used equipment not a classic vehicle. you go in there offering classis money and they will think they have something. don't let other people spend your money for you.

I agree with the low ballers. Worst that happens is you get upped on the price. I've bought vehicles advertised for hundreds more than I offered and eventually paid. Bring a big chisel, especially if you don't have that much money to begin with, and scrape as much as you can off the price! How much someone thinks it is worth and would pay is meaningless, unless they are standing in line in front of you. No offense meant, btw.
