235 cu dizzy wobble
I have just imported a 60 longbed stepside into NZ from LA. It arrived a couple of weeks ago.
When I first started it I noticed the dizzy wobbled in the block, it runs what appears on the face of it to be a factory dizzy, I've pulled that and can't see any signs of wear, the guy I purchased the truck off tells me its a new repro 235 cu engine block. I have not run the numbers to check this out but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? The truck runs fine at 60mph but I do notice a little pre ignition knock at low speed, not under load, the opposite to what you'd expect . I am using the truck as everyday transport, its my only transport, so I'd like to repair it. |

Re: 235 cu dizzy wobble
You should know that the 235 has what's called a "Floating Distributor". That means the Vacuum Advance pulls the whole distributor around to advance the timing, unlike the next generation that just moves the Breaker Plate where the Points / Condenser mount. You MAY have seen the Distributor Advancing / Retarding.

Re: 235 cu dizzy wobble
Ya it's a medical term, it's all very technical.

Re: 235 cu dizzy wobble
My '62 C20 also has the 235 six, and the distributor head wobbles around too. Despite that issue, it has always run flawlessly like a sewing machine. Yes, it's contrary to common sense that it could be damaged or worn out and run well at the same time, so I've wondered about it as long as i've owned it. I've thought about swapping it out many times, but you know the saying, "if it aint broke... why fix it?"

Re: 235 cu dizzy wobble
The thing about a points type distributor that will cause driveability issues is wear in the distributor shaft. If the points cam wobbles back and forth, the dwell changes at random. Not good.
