WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Looking for a complete 283 engine preferably. Need it to be a truck engine with
"M" suffix code, and date casting to be 8,9, or 10 of 1963. Prefere standard bore cylinders. Needed for a 1964 model year truck, that was built in late 63'. Les Last edited by aotte1; 03-31-2018 at 12:16 AM. |

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Expanding my list to include November 1963 also.
Looking for a truck 283 engine, preferably std bore, "M" suffix code. Dates cast August, September, October, and November 1963. It is for an early 1964 model year K10 built in late 1963. Will take a block only too. Thanks, Les Last edited by aotte1; 03-31-2018 at 12:17 AM. |

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Example photo of what the pad on passenger side in front of cylinder head will look like. This information tells you, plant that built engine, month and day built, along with engine application, e.g. C10 truck.
Decoded photo example is - Flint, 02-February, 14th day of month, M - truck 283 2 barrel 170 HP. For year need date on back of block. For needed 1963 engine, same as photo, except month will be different, any day is good. First two month digits will be 08 or 09 or 10 or 11. Example of needed suffix pad is "F1008M" - October 08 M. This shows the correct month. The year 1963, is shown by the block casting date on back of block. For pad example "F1008M", the block casting date on back of block would be "J083" - October 03 1963. The "3" in the casting date, indicates it is a 1963 cast block, that would be used in a early 64' truck. Block casting number will be 3849852. For this number in 1963 and 64', used only in trucks, per reference by member who knows his facts. Last edited by aotte1; 03-22-2018 at 01:59 PM. |

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
I feel your pain but this is sort of a needle in a haystack to find. Its going to take some time and patience and probably buying a whole parts truck to get. I had to find a rarer "MA" block for two of mine because they were factory automatics. I ended up settling for a correct suffix code and gave up the granular search for correct dates on my 63. Next to nobody in the country save about 5 anal guys like me even know to look for the suffix code on one at a show or anywhere in the first place. I will keep an eye out for 64's that have the 283 V8 and manual combo, but searching through random blocks is going to take you years. Better to focus on finding the truck that has it and bite the bullet and sell off the remaining truck you don't need after you get your engine.

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Ken,
Yes would like a little more information on the engine to see if it will work for me, please. On the machined pad your photo shows as blank, can you wet it to see if code shows when wet, and/or trace it by placing blank white paper on it and run pencile over pad area to see if it shows any code. On the casting date back of block, can you send another photo that shows the characters a little more clear please. It will be an alpha and three numbers, something like “A165” Thanks. Les |

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Les, I took some more pics of the numbers on the back of the block.
Looks like A235 to me. I wirebrushed and wet the pad on the front of the block and I still can t see any numbers. Is there any way to corroberate the date by intake or exhaust manifold numbers. Pictures are attached. Thanks, Ken LMK |

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Did a rubbing, looks like that might be A 265. Still can't see any #'s on the front pad. I believe I read some where, maybe Mortec, That some motors didn't get stamped. Ken

Warren,
Thanks for heads up, have emailed him for the suffix code to see if it is an “M” suffix code block. He is out of town currently, will let me know once he returns. Thanks, Les |

Re: WTB: 283 engine, M suffix, late 63
Ken,
Looks like the block was cast in January 1965, by the block date code. Agree that some block were not stamped, and your pad looks like it may show original machine marks. A little hard to tell just from the photo. Thanks, Les |

I think all mine are 62 and 63 model car 327's but I will look.
What part number are the big truck heads? I wish I had seen this thread earlier. I spent the weekend at the KOA in Shepherdsville.
