I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
Back in the mid-1990s, one of the car magazines did an article about a 1957(?) Chevy truck that was built to race in the Silver State and Pony Express road races. From what I remember, the truck ran a 3.8L Buick turbo V6 with one-off cam and fuel injection. The truck was lowered and white in color, with a large aluminum splitter/air intake under the front grille. It should have been between 1995 and 1997, about the same time I began working on my truck.
I'll be darned if I can find it. Either my Google is very weak or there wasn't much done with the truck following after the races. As I recall, the truck was capable of 150ish sustained and due to the proprietary EFI, they were pulling down fuel mpg in the mid 50s, giving them an advantage over competitors for fuel stops. Does anyone else remember this article? It may have been a 1955 or 1956 body. -Joe

Re: I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
I bought about every rod magazine out there in the mid 90's and don't remember that one.
This gives all of the results for each year and most every entry for most years that actually ran in the event incuding dnf cars. https://www.sscc.us/event_results.aspx

Re: I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
According to the site where I found it, Motorspeed says Smokey drove the truck 132.353 mph in the flying mile on Daytona Beach in '58.
http://murdercycles.tumblr.com/post/...-pickup-at-the If you look through the pictures in this article you'll find some TF trucks working in the background: http://www.hotrod.com/articles/mayhe...rom-auto-1956/ Here's another neat one: http://www.trucktrend.com/news/163-1...ic-flashbacks/ There's also a picture of a '55 or '56 that Smokey taped up and drove at Daytona in '56. That one is recorded at 116 mph. Last edited by 1project2many; 03-13-2018 at 08:03 AM. |

Re: I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
That gray truck would be out simply because it isn't a race truck from the start.
I've probably got the magazine but most of my old magazines got ruined out in the storage shed due to a roof leak. That and there are probably 5000 to dig through. The Silverstate race/rally didn't start until 1998. With that you are probably looking at late 90's.

Re: I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
I did find a bit of history on the event and see that it actually started in 1988 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver...ssic_Challenge
I scrolled through several years of results and entries but no mention of that truck. It could have been before they started posting the full list of entries though. I also scrolled though about a thousand photos of "race trucks" with no results. A lot of magazine project rigs seem to get shoved to the wayside as time goes along though.

Re: I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
142 mph in a tf truck is a little scary IMO
i've had my truk speedo pegged, the wind noise is deafening surprised the paint stayed on the hood with all the flexing

Re: I'm trying to find a magazine article from the mid-1990s
Ogre, I had mine up to 114 before it was restored. I was following a friend and because the speedo was incorrect I thought it was only 85-90. There were holes in the floor, no door seals, and hurricane force winds in the cab. It's hard to imagine Smokey running down the beach at 132 on bias ply skinnies and no factory sway bar.

I wonder if that 57 Cameo bed off of Smokey's truck survived the crusher when he finished with it..
