re-shooting base help!!

hey there guys,
I'm re-shooting my base coat. I'm not happy with the tiger stripes and have knocked everything down to at least 800 grit. I had already cleared. The more I wet sanded to get rid of the orange peel, the more I noticed my coverage sucked!!!.......Rookie Painter I most add!!!!

Questions is:

Is 800 too fine for BITE for my re-base? or do I need 600?
It is a metallic blue, 506 Medium Blue Poly

What paint are you using? The spec sheet should say what grit is recommended.

I'm no a pro painter but have sprayed about 5 trucks now. Each time learned a little more and long way to go to be called a car painter.
Metallics are very difficult and really tough for a newbie. I had a similar problem with tiger strips on a '92 gmc I restored.
Watch YouTube vids on spraying Metallics. Good info out there. Gun set up plays a huge role in success.
The last metallic I shot i did normal 50 percent overlap and then on last coat pulled gun back and did a dusting type coat directly after wet coat
3 coats base

If you ask 5 people you will get 5 answers. My opinion... I would reshoot base over fresh clear sanded with 800 without thinking twice. If that clear was a few years old and cured I would probably go to 600.

Doing a drop coat on your final coat of base is probably the easiest way to not repeat your tiger striping.

Drop coat. Yes. That's what it's called. Couldn't remember the name used.

32 years exp with body shop here, 800 will be fine. Good luck and happy sanding

If the stripes are caused by the "metallics" falling out of solution, keep shaking the gun or rent a paint pot that will stir the paint constantly. This used to be true when aluminum was the additive. I had a '64 Malibu SS that was silver, and that ensured that the paint was consistent. I don't know if this is true for newer paint.

Nason...I looked at the tech sheet, nothing mentioned about "recoat" sanding

I agree about "difficult to paint" as a rookie
I rushed also....shoould have checked my stuff prior to clearing. F.N.G. hahaha

It was a rookie painter/lack of experience issue actually. thank you for your reply......
i'm going to spray again tomorrow. Hugger and 60_project mentioned 800 being ok....
I'm going to watch my coverage and obviously make sure there is not striping this "second" go-round.

it is fresh. it will be a week old tuesday.

For me that tiger stripe didn't really show itself until I shot the clear. Of course by then it was too late.
Get some darn good lighting on it. Side lighting especially.
The last metallic I sprayed was on corolla flip, hood.
Saw some stripping so I sprayed one base coat in on direction and the other coat opposite in a cross pattern
Prob not the way a pro would do it but results where good.

i totally agree with the clear statement.... i was so excited and thought everything looked great...hahahha
was wet sanding and "admiring" my work and stood back and thought, " what the crap"!???!! but with non "PC" words....

Lighting is a problem I will address also....thank you for that too.....The lights in my garage are not sufficient.

Cool. Hope it helps. I shot my truck in hugger orange and white last year non metallic. Sooo much easier with non mattelic for sure.

I sure wish this one wasn't metallic. when i started it i wanted to stay as close to "original" as possible. I was researching all the of the goodies and found out it had metallic paint....

guess there's not better way to learn the hard stuff than to start with the hard stuff....hahahahaha

re-shot everything today. turned out much, much better. thank you guys for your help. the clear flowed a lot better too, that was a mixing issue. there shouldn't be as much sanding this time.

Glad things went better this time for ya!
I'm guessing you know all of this but if not it may help.
Don't wait too long to wet sand. Easier to sand before it gets too hardened.
I think I sanded my Nason select clear in 48 hours. 2000 grit with soapy water. Soak the paper for a few minutes first. Want sandpaper soft and not sharp edges.
I used 3m perfect it kit.
3 step process that has really good results.

Glad things went better for you. It would suck to do all that work and then have to live with a not so nice paint job.
