metal to wood boards shorter?

I am going to put a wood bed over my steel bed in my 1972 factory SWB.Are the boards shorter than stock boards? my concern is for tailgate clearance. TY

I have not seen a wood over steel bed, but the boards should the same length, as the tailgate drops in behind the bed surface. The wood will make it taller than the tailgate when open, but the same length should work.

Have you seen Show Beds? They lay on top of your steel floor on a frame and can be removed in no time. The cross braces lock like your fingers in a prayer position if that makes sense. Seen this on Stacy Davids Geazs TV show.It looked to be about 3/4 inch thick.With thetailgate up you could not tell it was not stock.
