5.7 vortec short water pump?
I'm looking to put in a L31-R 5.7 vortec in my truck in the next couple weeks. I'm wondering if a short water pump will have clearance for the plastic timing chain cover. I don't want to swap to a long water pump for simplicity or change to a stamped cover because this will void the warranty I think. Also any links to a plug I could get for the crank sensor? Thanks.

My experience is it will not clear.
I've heard you can bolt a metal timing cover to the L31. I have not tried it.

Re: 5.7 vortec short water pump?
I have a stock short pump on one . I changed the bolts on the back of the pump to allen head button head for more clearance . I tried an after market high flow Tuff stuff an the housing was to thick an would not fit. You can change the cover to the old style do a search their are several things to change.

If you are purchasing a GM crate motor be sure to read the fine print on their warranty which is something to the effect that "when installed in a 1996-2002 vehicle".
Good luck. Capt. RMW |
