Has anyone seen the 4L80E speed tailhousing?

When I put a 4L80E in my truck i was confronted with the common problem of it not having a speedo output, so I use the electronic box that spins the cable for me driven by the TCM computer. I don't care for it, it's a little noisy and the cable bounces.

I should have done the 4L80E tailhousing with the speedo provision, but it was $695 for a tailhousing!

I'm just wondering if anyone owns one or is familiar with it. I'd hate to choke down that price only to find out it's not a nice piece!

what year is your transmission ? I was thinking that most of the 4l80e already have a the vss switch in them.. if I remember my 06 4l80 it was a 2wd and I took off the rear tailhousing and it didn't have the switch in it .see the pic at the back side of the drivers side rite above the round wire harness hookup

4x4K30 I think your confusing it with the NSS switch. The VSS sensor is the thing your showing, but The thing the OP is referring to is a provision for cable-driven speedometers on our older trucks. The 4l80e never had (unless maybe in some fleet application I haven't seen) a factory gear/cable speedo drive. He's currently using the drive box (Cable-X?) to convert the factory VSS/OSS signal into a little servo motor which drives the cable speedo.

Bruce (?) is right, I'm speaking of the tailhousing with the provision for installing gears and connecting a mechanical (cable) speedometer, which was never offered stock. That's why it's so expensive... $50 for a TH400 and $695 for this one!

yes I am confused when I swapped in my 6.0 and 4l80e in my 77 I don't remember the tail housing having any switches in it. the transmission was a 2wd and I removed the tail housing only and cut off 2 inches of the rear out put shaft to bolt up the 205 . now I just put a 6.0 in my 79 and I am using a turbo 400 and I thought the vss switch was just used for the electric speedometers. but I have read that you do need to use it for the engine to operate correctly so I guess I will just get a vss inline speed-o and use it since they are not expensive.

ok I was confused I just never did know everything about the vss when I swapped the 6.0and 4l80 in to my 77 it was all hooked together when I dropped it in .. so when I put just the 6.0 in my 79 with the turbo 400 I thought I didn't need to worry about the vss

Re: Has anyone seen the 4L80E speed tailhousing?

Dave what brand of cable converter did you use ?

We used this one http://www.shiftworks.com/tailhousing.htm on my dads truck it was junk gears did not fit properly and it took a day in the shop to make it work. Were in canada so that price is closer to a $1000.00 Canadian once you get it in your hands your better off buying a electric cable box.

There isn't anything to see in the housing in stock form. The device in question adds those parts in, and requires a modded shaft. Its a really expensive solution, but no one really has a better option for the 80e's.

Re: Has anyone seen the 4L80E speed tailhousing?

I used the dakota digital convertor box in mine. ..there's no noise and no bounce...it could be the cable between the box and speedo needs lubed....mine works great and I wouldn't hesitate to use another one...and am fixing to on my current project. ...I have my box mounted under hood so that may make some difference..

Re: Has anyone seen the 4L80E speed tailhousing?

Yeah, I didn't do mine, the guy who installed the trans did. Nice tidy work but he mounted the box under the dash and the cable has a bendy path I don't care for. I should try just a long cable in a loop and see if it helps.
