Correct engine?

I just bought a 1963 K10 long bed and I am trying to find out if it's got the correct engine.
The engine numbers don't match the VIN number. It's a 230 six . Is there any way to verify its the engine it came with by the VIN or on the vehicle.
I am thinking of putting in a 283 v8. The six is very lacking in power!
And will a small block drop right in?
Thanks.

Hard to know if the engine is original or not without the build sheet. If it is a 230 a small block should drop right in.
I see you are in SF also, if you need any advice let me know, I am happy to help.

Re: Correct engine?

One way to tell if 6cyl only came with manual? Or did they call me with autos? The reason I say that cuz my 65 had a 283 with powerglide. The frame has the auto bracket vs the manual bracket. So if 6cyl only came with manuals then u can narrow it down to only 6cyl vs V8, that won’t tell which 6cyl thou.

Theres no way to tell by the vin , the vin number is not in any of the engines 1960-1966 like some car have. What is the code by the distributor ? Also look for a casting number and date on the engine.

Re: Correct engine?

I remember reading somewhere that in 1963 the 4x4s still had the old 235s in them.

Re: Correct engine?

I checked the casting numbers on block and it is definitely a 230 six.
Looks like it's time for an upgrade.
Thanks for the Info.
