Rear axle bearings
Seeings how I can get no response on the 1989-1998 forum maybe I can get one here! I have a 1998 C1500 Silverado, need new axle bearings, tried to pull one side out with a slide pulled but it only succeded in pulling all of the bearings out and left the outer race. Does some one make a bearing puller that has deep teeth to get hold of the backside of the bearing case so it gets the bearing out as one? The one at Auto Zone that go thru the center of the bearing than flip open only hit the bearing not the casing. Any body have any suggestions?????

Re: Rear axle bearings
Maybe take a small die grinder and work away at the old race, gently not hitting the axle tube, and gently get a screwdriver and tap between tube and old race enough to remove it,I know it sounds a little Mcgyver and barbaric, but you got to start somewhere, also don't forget to stuff a rag in the axle tube to keep the filings out of the fear end, just my 2 cents worth

Re: Rear axle bearings
Auto Zone loans out this puller that might work. Three fingers are adjustable to get inside the back side of the bearing race. I used one on my rear and it worked well getting the hole bearing out.

Re: Rear axle bearings
Snap On makes a two jaw puller that works the best for these. Eventually, though, the arms on the pullers wear out. I haven't had luck with any other.
Best to take a cut off wheel and carefully carve grooves on opposite sides of the race. Ususally a couple good hits in the groove with a big chisel will get them free. Oops. I thought you were talking about he differential case side bearings. You are talking about the axle bearing races. Carbide cutter on a die grinder

Re: Rear axle bearings
Thanks for all of your suggestions. Auto Zones puller the teeth are not deep enough to get a bite on the outer bearing housing so all you do is yank all the bearings out, but I have a friend that gave me a harbor freight bearing puller 2 fingers or three and I am going to make me a 2 pc. plate that will hit the outer race. I will let you now how it goes.

Re: Rear axle bearings
We destroyed the bearings on a semi-float 14 bolt we are putting in my kid's Jimmy project. Used a pipe from one side to the other and hammered it out. We pulled the spider gear pin and did it without removing carrier if I remember correctly. I've kept the about 5 foot long pipe around for 20 years just for hammering out recalcitrant axle bearings.

Re: Rear axle bearings
I have seen that pipe clear thru from the other side work well.

Re: Rear axle bearings
I use the pipe also. I use the long bar from a weight lifting set.
