Anyone rebuilt their transfer case?

I need new seals in the transfer case it was leaking pretty bad, wondering if any of you guys have tacked this, or should I take it to as shop. Also the speed cable thing (don't its name) can it be rebuilt or is there a replacement part.

Can't get much simpler than rebuilding the np205... I rebuilt mine with never having rebuilt one before and had no issues. I believe that box on the end of your speedo cable is an aftermarket piece to compensate for running different size tires than stock. I didn't have one on my tcase. There doesn't look like there is anything that needs rebuilt on it. The sleeve that threads into the tcase seals the fluid from getting to the cable so I imagine you'd just have to grease the gears in that box up anf bolt it back together.. Or if you're going to run a stock size tires you can just leave it out all together.

Just did mine last year. I bought a complete rebuild kit off eBay for around $100 with a mix of Timken and Koyo bearings. Some of the new stuff comes with the rollers preloaded and retained so you don't need to pack all these in.

The largest roller bearings in the transfer case are unavoidable though. Have grease ready.

Replace the shifter shaft seals, and use some scotch brite pads to clean the shafts. I used high tack sealant on all the covers and seals and haven't had any leaks since.

It's pretty easy in terms of rebuilding stuff. If you've done wheel bearings and races before you can handle this. Geb Built's guide on YouTube is a good step by step video guide.

I dont think per packing the bearings with gease like you would for wheel bearings is required. The bearings in the tcase are going to constanly be splashed with warm atf or gear oil. Any grease applied would be washed off in short order.

I think its to hold the roller bearings in place to be able to install the shafts.

Yeah, I used some Vaseline to hold the loose roller bearings in place while installing.

Thanks guys, I'll get the kit and give it a try. I think (at least for me) it looks like a lot happening in there with needle bearings that will fall out and things like that. One more question if I may, the seals that are in the trans adapter when replaced will stop ATF from going in the transfer case correct? I did have that problem.

They should..... I chose the fill the tcase with atf after the rebiuld just in case it leaks by in the future it won't be mixing atf and gear oil. There is a lot of dabate about using atf fluid in the tcase but if it was good enough for gm to start using in the later years of np205 production it's good enough for me.

I finished the rebuild of my transfer case and happy with how it went. It shifts through all ranges great.

I got the gasket kit and seals from a local parts store and worked great.
