Starter goes "thunk".
350 sb. Lately when I go to crank the engine the starter just goes thunk but doesn't do anything. No noise, no trying to turn over- nothing. If I let off the key and try again it fires right up. When it does crank it sounds fine so I'm assuming the gear/tooth engagement is good. The battery cables are new,clean and tight.
Is this just a faulty solenoid I'm dealing with? |

The starter gear may not be engaging the flywheel completely which would be indicative of a failing solenoid.

Potentially a hot starter. Does it usually do it after driving for a bit? My 67 is having this issue now, so I’ll be putting a starter thermal wrap so it doesn’t get so hot from the headers. Also, the ignition switch may be going bad, mine was.

There is a difference between a thunk and a click . A thunk would indicate a loose starter . Have you gotten under there and grabbed a hold of it . A click would lean to a solenoid problem .
From what you say I would check starter bolts first . Starter can move and bind . |
