Well I pulled my first engine today!!!

It was alot easier than I though, and now the
fun begins...... Cam, Intake, Paint and lots
of chrome!!

Allright all you veterans out there. How does a guy go about cleaning 33 years of grease off a motor? So far I have degreased and wire brushed, and still need alot of cleaning.

It is soaking right now in degreaser, then I was going to either hose it down or pressure wash it tomorrow.

Do any of you have any words of wisdom?? Will laundry detergent and a scrub brush do the trick??

I want my paint to stick, and come out looking nice, so I'm willing to take my time!!

Powder detergent works great for getting all the grease and grime off. Just make sure you pressure wash it when you are donejust to make sure you get it out of all the little cracks and crevices.

take it to the car wash and spray the hell out of it just make sure its one of those car washes where nobody actually works there otherwise they will get p!ssy

I used Easy-Off oven cleaner heavy duty brand and a power washer.Came out nice but I get the munches every time I work on it lol

Super clean is pretty good stuff for this.
If you are rebuilding it, they will probably hot tank it which will eat EVERYTHING off the metal.

Hey Longhorn Man, Where does a guy buy super clean? Who makes it ? I am only putting in a cam and detailing it out so I wont be getting it dipped. Wish I could though..

I have had good luck with carb cleaner, oven cleaner, and brake cleaner. Go drive around late at night to find a car wash

Most around here have a special bay for greasy parts and stock trailers.....

I use a paint gun loaded with thinner and shoot around 60 psi with the nozzel at solid stream.

Dano...SuperClean works good.....I used it on my Caprice engine compartment....I believe you can get it at Schucks of all places....

This might not sit well with the neighbors but..Get a 55 gallon drum put lye or powdered drano in it with some water. Build a propane burner under it and boil the steel parts. Takes the grease off.

Oven Cleaner hands down!
You never said just what you are doing. If you are going to take it to the machine shop to have it rebuilt, don't put to much effort in cleaning, they will hot tank it.
If you are just going to clean it up, stuff some goodies in it, then oven cleaner and a power washer! Final wipe with automotive paint prep and what ever you put on it will stick! Now, if you could get your hands on some R-30 refrigerant, one shot of liquid will make it paint ready!
Let us know what your plans are for the engine, rebuild or what.

My plans are to install a mild Cam, New intake, Carb, Timing Chain, valve seals and springs, an HEI, and some chrome. It wont be going out to a Machine Shop.

How long do I let the oven cleaner sit on it? Does it leave a film?

If you get the clinging kind you will be able to see it foam. Do not let it dry on there. As for leaving a film, thats why I suggested the automotive paint prep final wipe. It will remove any film, grease, finger/hand oils. It will run you about 15 bucks for a gallon, but goes a very long way. Just dampen rag and wipe, rag does not have to be soaked, just damp. You should be able to get it at any auto parts store that aslo sells auto paint supplies. You can also use it on your brackets etc. Even after I sand blast a part, I wipe it with this stuff.
Good luck with your project. Wish I had the time to do one!

The Super Clean is made, or marketed, by Castrol. Comes in a purple spay bottle. I've used it and its works great. Just don't get it on your skin. It will burn after awhile.

Yeah...Cat Fuzz is right. We get it in 55 gallon drums at work, and I spilled some down my *front side* once filling the floor buffer.
Burns is not the word I would use....however, there is an edditing program on this site that blocks the words I used.

Even if you do the oven cleaner....gloves is a good idea as is fresh air.

Ive made some progress. The Cam and timing set are in and I am waiting to get my heads back from the machine shop. Tha color is Tangier like my truck and I think its gonna look good with all the chrome!!

Now I can almost start on the tranny!!
