Now is the time to take your scrap metal to the yard.
Locally last weekend I got $55 a ton for normal scrap and $65 a ton for drums/rotors.
I don't think I have EVER seen it this good.

Just a heads up for those who do this.

A ton seems like a whole lot of metal. I don't do this, so I've got no idea. How many rotors would that be?? To get perspective.

That works out to $.03/pound....that is really good! Last time i sold it it was at $.01/pound.....and i have a crapload of scrap laying around our place. I was going to get rid of it...but it couldn't pay for the gas it would take for me to get it to the buying place.

Yeah,

Last time I loaded up about 400lbs of crap, leafs, drums etc and got a little over 4bucks, ha ha ha. I'll never do that that again! Let the city pick it up now, thats what they are paid for.

I feel for those people I see with the extremely overloaded p/u's. I don't see how they cover gas?

Yeah I took a load in about a week or so ago...around 400lbs and got just under $9.00. That was my first time so I have no idea what prices were like before that

We quit hauling in scrap steel when short steel fell below $100 a ton and engine cast dropped below $125 a ton which was back in the early 90's, all scrap metal prices appear to be going up with copper at .90 a pound dealing in tonneage.
it requires approx 80-100 rotors to make a ton just depending if they have hubs attached or not.

Have to agree with GMCPaul on the price. $100 a ton seems to be a good break even point. When we had a farm equipment auction in 95 price was above $90. We filled the brother-in-laws old demo derby hulks with scrap and got $100 each for them from the scrappers at the auction.

When the economy rebounds from this war, the price of scrap should easily go over $100 again.

I scrap out about 2000 pounds of heavy iron a week! i have a deal with a local yard for $3/100 pounds. I word in a truck repair/maintance shop, and truck brake drums are 75-100 pounds each. the extra $60 or so a week helps a lot.
i check around with other shops to see if other shops have someone hauling scrap. i found 2 other shops that were throwing drums in the dumpster. if you ask nice, most of them will keep drums aside for you. i stop in once a week and pick up the drums. some weeks i've seen over a hundred extra bucks for less than an hour or two of my time.
Litte advice, if you do this, get a heavy duty trailer with sides on it. then you have the scrap yards unload with the elctro magnet.
get the good scrap deals now, when prices ever do rebound to early 90's prices, you can make a good buck off scrappin!
