Just bought a new DD...'75 C20 Cheyenne Camper Special
Crashed my beater/driver '65 C30 months ago and at least needed something else to drive while I fixed it, so I just picked this one up. Think it's got 115,000 on it, still pretty tight and runs great. 350/TH400/3.73's. Wish it had a 454 and SM465, but the 3.73's will be nice on the highway and I can stick a 454 and my NV4500 in there later if I want. Paid $1,550 and drove it the 60 miles back home this evening, still need to clean it up and go over it. Left brake light needs a new bulb or something, AC is weak (but works), rear brakes wanted to lock up bad the first few times I hit the pedal, but overall everything seems to work and it drives nice, just minor stuff. Little bit of rust, not too bad. Just thought I'd post it up since everyone (including me) seems to like the new truck threads. I'll get some more pics tomorrow when I clean it up. So far I like it enough I might keep it.

I'm glad you bought it. I'd seen it for sale online and was running out of excuses to not go out and see it (which obviously turns into dragging another one home)

Re: Just bought a new DD...'75 C20 Cheyenne Camper Special
Thanks guys. Put about 400 miles on it so far and I'm liking it more and more. Surprising how solid it actually is. I like the paint and trim, too. Might swap a 454 into it with my NV4500 when I get my Impala done down the road. Still need to clean it up some more, but here's a couple more pictures:

Have to come up with some new gauge lenses, they certainly didn't fare as well as the rest of the truck!

I used some plastic polish on mine and can see through them again. Not perfect, but reasonable.
I wouldn't say 3.73 rear end is exactly nice on the highway without overdrive, at least not with the 30" tires I have, but it's certainly better than the 4.10 I used to have.

Re: Just bought a new DD...'75 C20 Cheyenne Camper Special
Might try that. I do have 265/75R16's on it now that are 32" tall, but I'm used to the 4.10's I had in the other truck I drove all the time (and regularly ran 70 in), so 3.73's are comparatively highway-oriented (I actually drove it for quite some time with 4.57's).

I used the polish mostly for functional reasons - when I bought the truck it was bad enough that I couldn't read the odometer, now I can no problem.
32s are bigger than I'd expected on a 2WD. No rubbing problems?

Re: Just bought a new DD...'75 C20 Cheyenne Camper Special
Thanks guys.
I actually have 245/75R16's on the front, 265/75R16 mud tires on the back. They'd probably clear fine on the front but I haven't tried it. Took the camper off and dusted some argent silver on the rear bumper. Logged 800 miles on it now. |
