Power steering question?
Currently my '74 C10 has manual steering and came with 3 on the tree. The engine and tranny have been sold and I'm preping the truck for a lSx/4l80e swap.
I want to add power steering, my LS engine obviously came with power steering and I plan to reuse all the brackets and pulley's. Question is which steering box do I need? Can I run a stock replcement C10 steering box with my LS pump? Thinking I can just need to either make the lines or maybe there is something I can buy out of the box? need to convert metric to std I'm guessing but they must make those couplers? Then what about the steering column? What are my options here, not looking for anything special but would like lose the column shift and maybe add tilt. Do I need one specifically for power steering? I see most are 30" but some are 32", what is the difference, does it put the wheel 2" closer to the driver? I'm 6'3" so I really don't want to put the wheel closer! |

Re: Power steering question?
you need an 81-87 steering box so your ps lines will go in without mods.

Re: Power steering question?
That makes sense, that way I can just order up hose of the right length. is '87 hose the right length? I'm keeping stock truck acc mounts on the LSx, low driver side is where the stock steering pump is.

Re: Power steering question?
Just did a 5.3 swap and a stock replacement 1985 high pressure hose screwed right into the LS power steering pump. No leaks, works great.

Re: Power steering question?
I bolted in a 1987 power steering box and run the pressure and return line to my 2005 steering pump (with res) and all appeared fine.
I have noticed the either the pump or box has a whirring noise when I turn the whee, this was the case right from the start and I also recently developed a very small leak. The box was a rebuild unit and I'm wondering if I blew out a seal near the pitman. There does appear to be a small witness mark near the pressure line but I don't see a trail to the drip location and the lines are tight. Could there be a mis-match in pressure from the pump to the box which would cause this or might this be a bad box? |

Re: Power steering question?
I made sure to buy a later model so I had the metric version.
Thinking the is either a bad box or the pump is driving more pressure than this box was made for. Anyone know how to test my theory? |

Re: Power steering question?
Found the leak. It's coming from the seal on the capped end of the steering pump. Still not sure if this is a pressure thing or a bad rebuild. I think I'll buy a new one and see what happens.
