Is this the oil pressure sending unit? Where does it go?

Very back of block next to intake edge. That is for a mechanical gauge so if that’s what you have just find the hole and screw it in.

No!
That’s just a bolt hole.
Look behind the intake beside the distributor. You need to find a fitting that the end of your oil line screws into. The fitting screws into the block. The oil line screws into the fitting.

Don’t forget to unplug behind your dashboard and run the engine till oil comes through the pipe before connecting again to dashboard.

Doing that will prevent air to remain stuck in the tube, and you’ll get an accurate, responsive gauge.

If you like oil all over under your dash, on the floorboards and everywhere else just do that.
You don’t want to run the motor!
Unplug the power to your distributor and bump the starter until you get oil at the gauge.

You’re right, better to do that...

I consider I was lucky not to have an oil bath in the cabin.

It sounds like a good idea but in reality it is a effort in futility against gravity. The effect is only temporary as the oil will drain from the line. (Some people try to keep the oil from bleeding back by looping the line down to about the level of the crank shaft before going up to the guage. You will have some experimenting to do to make sure it is working.). But is it worth the effort? If you feel it is you most likely will be happier by getting a electric sender and a data logger.
When the engine is stopped gravity pulls the oil down leaving the oil passages empty. The oil in the guage line slowly drains back to the passage and air takes its place in the guage line. When you start the engine the air is trapped as oil is pushed up the line. The tighter your bearing clearances are the slower it happens, but it happens. Years ago I had one of those nylon oil pressure lines on my GTO (until I burnt it in two on my header) and went round and round trying to keep the air out of it. I finally asked about how to keep the air out and it was explained to me.

I ran mine briefly before connecting the gauge. Tube was run into my brand new interior. Tube blasted oil out onto a rag I had sitting there and nowhere else.

This is really not necessary. All the oil drains out again when you turn it off.
