Corvette Side Pipes?
Sometime long ago, (yes I'm that old) I saw a movie staring (Steve McQueen maybe?)
and he got into a chase in like some airport elevated parking lot, (maybe) with an older Stepside or maybe a Short bed, and the truck had chrome Corvette side pipes with the heat shields on them, and I thought that looked seriously COOL! Sorry if this question is in the wrong section, but it's 2 AM, the truck is currently parked, and I'm currently way too out of shape to care where I should be actually be posting this question. Feel free to move it. |

Re: Corvette Side Pipes?
IMO, the mid to late sixties corvette side pipe shields are the only ones in their class. I searched the world over for side pipes for a car project a few years ago and could only find one style that striked my fancy...67 vette side pipe covers. Luckily I found a set that someone had drilled holes in to hold the inner insulators on which lessened their value to the corvette enthusiast. I snatched them up for $150.
They look good on our trucks too!

Re: Corvette Side Pipes?
I'm not familiar with the scene you mention. There is a thread on this site, titled something like Our Trucks in the Movies. There is also a website like IMDb [Internet Movie Data base] called IMCDb [Internet Movie Car Database ?] or something like that. Not sure of the initial, could be V for vehicle or T for Truck. "Picture Car" is what they call them in the movie industry.
I am old enough to remember a Mopar special dealer product called "The Lil Red Express". It was a Dodge truck, stepside, halfton, IIRC, with side stack exhausts coming up behind the cab. The vertical stacks had chrome louvered guards as burn protectors. The bed had wooden side fences about 2 foot higher than the bedside walls. I am not sure of any performance benefit of such an exhaust configuration. I think it was just to look bad-ass cool, like a small Semi Tractor. I suppose it would help if you had to ford 5 foot deep rivers every day in your commute, but not a real world concern. In 50 or so years, if some one with a Chevy stepside wanted to duplicate the style of Mopar's truck with Corvette pipes as exhaust stacks, it's certainly possible. I have never seen one outside of a ''Fast and Furious'' picture car.

I tried to post early in the AM and my connection crashed. When I redid the post, there were 4 new entries. Seems like the OP was thinking of lateral, not vertical side pipes anyway. I'll check out Steve McQueen movies on IMDb for a likely flick.

Re: Corvette Side Pipes?
Thanks for that Grump. I loved that red wagon. Bill Golden passed away a year or so ago and he lived just 6 miles from me. I never got to talk to him but I enjoyed his runs at the track. From all I have read and heard he was a devout christian and an incredibly nice guy.
Oh and the corvette side pipes? They belong on the corvettes. IMO

Re: Corvette Side Pipes?
Yes that was on the idea of what I saw in that movie.
They seemed to hang down a little lower than the ones in that picture though, and I just remembered how I thought they looked good. Didn't have a truck back then, and probably didn't even have a license back then. |

Re: Corvette Side Pipes?
By '79 the 360 was so dogged out by emissions to have less power than a '69 318 and suck twice as much gas. These trucks ran a little better, but no big power. Dodge did the stacks because that had become a fad with light trucks when the trend went from Vans (with side pipes) to Pickups in the late-70s. Things were a bit confused for style for a while in that era.

I never did and still don't like that era of trucks! I never could under stand the stacks on a pick up. Never! Side pipes fall in that same category for me.

Re: Corvette Side Pipes?
you got to remember it was during the disco era. and lots of rebelious movies had come out like smokey and the bandit and convoy. Pipes meant you were a rebel but without the cocain.

I like how you can see what looks like the end of a header coming out from the front. I would like a set that is long enough so that exits just before the rear tires on my Stepside. Wouldn't care if it had heat shields or not. Saw an older Corvette that had black ones I liked, and ceramic coated or chrome would work for me too. ...now off to find some groovy platform shoes! |
