Stock intake manifold for a 396
Hello everyone,
My name is Julio and I'm the owner of a 1968 C10 that the SPID says it's an original V8 396 truck. I didn't get the correct engine with it, but I would love to put the truck back to all original and so I'm here to ask a lot of questions from people that are a lot more knowledgeable than me. Would anyone know what the correct heads and intake manifold be for a 396 in 1968? Thank you in advance |

Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
Thank you. After some research, I've narrow it down to 3 sets of heads
3856260 3965198 3975950 Would anyone know which ones would be the correct ones? Also I think the correct intake is casting #3883948. Am I correct on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

This is a little more intake specific 3883948 1966 1967 1968 396 396 396 325 w/A.I.R. 325 325, 350 Cast iron with Rochester 4-bbl. No oil splash shield Im pretty sure the same casting numbers would apply to truck 396. Although I could be wrong. |

Some of the known engine suffix codes for 1968 trucks with BBC. You don't really need this data other than to see the split between 2 and 4 barrel intakes and the difference in HP.
Code Year CID HP Model Comment XE 1968 396 310 Truck L-66 AR, 10, 20 XF 1968 396 310 Truck L-66 20, 30 XG 1968 396 310 Truck L-66 AR, 10, 20 XH 1968 396 310 Truck L-66 20, 30 XK 1968 396 275 Truck L-66 2bbl, 10,20 XL 1968 396 275 Truck L-66 2bbl, 10,20 XM 1968 396 275 Truck L-66 2bbl, 20 XN 1968 396 275 Truck L-66 2bbl, 20, 30 Source: http://www.1968ss.com/bbcsuffix.asp Hth, -klb

Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
I remember back in 1990--97 I saw guys pulling the 396 out cus every one thought the 454 was the god saving motor.I had at one time 19 396 out of trucks and a few 402's witch is a 30 over 396.
Back in them days you could pick up a 396 for 200.00 with trans complete. Now your barking up the wrong tree.Yes people want to go back to factory But for the cost and with are gas being at a all time high best off buying the LS swap and put the 4L80E in in and call it a day.One other reason why most people took the 396 and the 402 out was Gas mileage. My 1968 longhorn has a 396 400 with a 4.10 gear at best it get 8 miles to a gallon. The LS 5.3 with the 4L80E will get you 18-23 miles plus it will have 3 times the power. But some guys want factory.Best thing to do save up 5000.00 for just the motor if you want factory you will have to sleeve the whole block with is 100 a sleeve plus 250.00 to do the work Then you will have to do all the engine work to get it bone stock with will come up to close to 5000.00.Putting back a numbers matching truck is expensive.Hope your RICH this truck will cost you more money and it wont fetch that much on the market after you spend 25K you be lucky to get what you have in it Build your truck to sell it make it desire able so it can get up words to 30K. If not go buy one that is done that has the 396 in it and save your self some grief. But this is the motor your looking for i took it out of my 1968 longhorn but the beds have been changed by PO Yes my longhorn was fully loaded AC power steering and brake |

Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
Your experience is sure different from mine. My Tahoe gets 15 - 16 with that combination, and my '69 327 K-10 gets 11-14. and the Tahoe has nowhere near 3 times the power, maybe not even as much power.

Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
Stsalvage,
Would you be willing to take some close up pictures of the casting numbers for the heads and the intake manifold please? Like yours my truck also came with power everything and AC. And yes I do agree with you and the better gas mileage and better engine choice that is an LS, but I would like to keep it factory to show my son some older engine examples Please let me know about those items. Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
Those are some good reference pictures there. Not sure the OP is looking for a numbers matching truck as much as just building the engine with the proper pieces and possibly sticking with the spid. At least that's what I read.
Nothing wrong with a BB IMHO. -klb

Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
You can't do numbers matching as trucks didn't have any part of the VIN stamped anywhere. The best you can do is period correct.

That's what I read time and time again. My hope is to be able to able to find the correct casting numbers and period correct parts.

Re: Stock intake manifold for a 396
can't do nothing cus it sitting in my 1971 Nova as mocking it up for big block no room to work on it and plus I'm to busy with work the pics are of 14 years ago when i had the engine out.It dose happen when you get older. An you have way to many projects. But the nova i was building.Have some choice parts on it and one of them is the 1968--69 SS horse shoe shifter. Most guys that build nova's always scream at me and say that's not right that shifter never came in the Nova. But the 1967 shifter that all the nova's use to sucked and you have to cut up the floor.Plus the 1967 camaro shift always broke. The 1968-69 uses the size of your index finger cable no need to cut up the floor.Plus most guys Love the horse shoe shifter with gauges. Most of them Love the idea
