GMC dump

I ran onto this GMC today. A local dealer has had this GMC since the early 70's.
The dealer was also dealer for a dump apparatus. He bought this truck at a Little Rock auction and since it had overloads to install a demo dump bed on.

Two interesting points jumped out at me. Note the markings in the paint on the front of the bed, and the emissions sticker on the windshield just below the left windshield. The windshield is original.

Aw, tell her she should go there with you. If things don't go as you had hoped, there is Bird In Hand, PA just a short drive up the road a piece.

That GMC is neat. What markings on bed? Do you mean where it looks like something was painted over and removed? Is that emissions sticker one we see elsewhere in the engine compartment? It is a Freemont truck, but never seen that on others. What kind of hubcaps are those? Are they 15" with those adaptors for 16 or do they fit OEM wheels? I see they added the better mirrors and used the 69-71 style.

Re: GMC dump

I need to go back and look at the paint on the front of the bed. When I looked in person it looked like factory but in the picture not so much.

The emissions sticker on the windshield is interesting. It's been there along time, so who knows.

It's a California emissions truck, but the pump has been removed.

Grumpy were you listening when I told the true story about my doctor visit?

I got home and my wife asked what the doctor said. I told her he said I need more sex. She said, OK, I'll put extra soap in the shower.

Another interesting point. The truck has woodgrain lower molding. I suppose it could have been added.

Re: GMC dump

He's trying to sell it to me.

The engine sounds good.

It sat 1/4 mile from my shop for over 40 years, and I had forgotten about it. Well actually, I called the guy about it about 10 years ago because I thought it was a K10. Found out it wasn't, Then forgot about it again.

You get credit for the noticing mirrors K.

The guy that has it now cut the ends off the overloads.

With a truck like that you wouldn't have to use that heavy ash trailer, as much.

Re: GMC dump

I bet the miles aren't so high on that. That white sure didn't hang in like the colors. My '71 Custom Camper started doing that.

Re: GMC dump

It doesn’t look like the frame was beefed up any. I would expect a 1/2 ton would need it at least in the area where the ram connects.

Re: GMC dump

It has 120 something thousand miles. The engine was changed at about 80,000. The dealer said he was going on vacation and told his mechanic to fix the oil leaks. The mechanic surmised they had a better engine sitting in the shop and put it in the truck.

The dump kit bolts to existing points on the frame. I wouldn't want to fill the bed with rock without expecting problems.

I've filled the bed of my truck with rock without problems (well, it did sag some, and the steering was 8reak* easy ).

Re: GMC dump

Those hoist under bed dumps can't, or shouldn't, handle all the truck can haul when it comes to dumping. A serious pickup dump conversion includes a sub-frame for the dump. Those are the ones you see where the bed sits way high. This type here just picks the bed up and the bed was designed to sit on the frame arched at the frame mounts. With hoist up the bed is a free standing unit, other than hinge and hoist mounting points. You put 2,000# up in the air it better be an even load

Yeah, it's kind of a yard mulch dump.

Boog has me thinking about a scrap iron hauler though. I need to turn a purchase order in to the front office and see if it goes through.
