Question Help Installing New Ignition Switch

what am I missing? Feeling real dumb here, have done this on other old vehicles, but cannot figure out my problem here.

I remember only taking-off the small bezel on my '67 Chevy C20. But now cannot get it to go together in my fresh dash. Even got a spacer used on 68 to 72's and no luck. (In picture with old switch.) Its like there is something missing to go behind dash, but my old bezel screwed into the dash, so what kept it from coming thru dash. Maybe the heat today has my head messed-up, but I cannot figure-out this simple delima.

Its an AWW (American Auto Wire) upgrade kit, but old switch and new look the same.
