Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Well I was super happy that I was able to finish my bench seat yesterday. So I decided to glue on the 1970 style door vinyl to the metal door panel. I thought I had chosen the right glue but obviously not. I used 3M 77 but it never stopped being sticky and did not hold the vinyl very good. Notice in the photo how it is falling off the steel door panel. I did a search on forums but could find a specific name of glue that others have used.
What does everyone else use. I'm looking at 3M 90, 3M Headliner and panel adhesive, or woodweld contact cement. Also now I need to clean off the 77!

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
That is one of the better jobs I've seen on a seat cover. Where did you source it?
Sorry no answer on your door panel. |

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
No mention of the white tiger! Haha!
Carsinc is where I got the cover. Bought new cheaper foams from either jegs or summit. The cover used NOS cloth and was not cheap but is well put together. Probably took them 6 weeks to make. Took me couple hours to put together.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
I used contact cement to glue leather material to abs door panels on a street rod I built a few years ago. Worked great. bought it at home depot.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
I think a spray adhesive works best. Goes on thinner and even, tacks right up and dries quicker. I assumed you meant the 3M 77 in a tube

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
I'm usually over on the 73-87 side of the forum, but I was just nosing around. I have a bit of a thing for seats and saw yours, very nice!!
So anyways, I have used this stuff. I do headliners from time to time, and it works great. And I use it for other projects. I have a couple of cans of the 3M 77, but I always use this. I'm not too impressed with the 3M 77. This is what the Performance Adhesive says, it can be used for what you are wanting: Performance High Temperature Headliner Adhesive is a high strength, high heat resistant contact spray adhesive. Performance High Temperature Headliner Adhesive has a long open time, a very consistent spray pattern that yield great coverage with professional results. Ideal for bonding numerous automotive, marine, and industrial materials, including foam backed headliners, carpet, fabrics, jute carpet pad, foam, kickpads, rubber, plastics, and sufficiently supported vinyl to metal and various surfaces. This product also includes a mixer ball in the can to help mix the adhesive when you shake the can. It is hard to beat this product in a spray headliner adhesive. Here's a link where I get it from: https://www.yourautotrim.com/daphitesphea.html

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Thanks for the replies guys. I'll check out the links. I used the spray version of 3M 77. I'm sure it is good when used for the right application. After sitting for a few days I can easily peel off the vinyl. Also it will not hold the wrapped edges down. I need something that immediately bonds and that can hold the stretched vinyl. The other kicker is I live in AZ and in the summer the inside of vehicles bake everything.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Good to know on the headliner spray. Was that the 3M brand? I'm guessing I'm going to need something that really bonds now that I have the 3M 77 that is embedded into the cloth and back of the vinyl.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
The headliner spray is the one I posted about, post #6. Performance Hi-Temp Adhesive. It dries very fast and holds. It won't get soft in the heat of the sun, that's why the name Hi-Temp

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Subscribed. I have new metal panels I was thinking of adding vinyl (or leather) to. I live in Bakersfield, CA and it's 104 Today so the adhesive has to stand up to high constant heat.
Looking forward to results with proper adhesive. After some googling, it looks like 3M 80 adhesive might work. $15 at Home Depot. https://www.homedepot.com/p/3M-19-oz...e-80/100174709 |

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Oh got it TKCR. Thanks
Looked at the 3M 80 spray and one problem I could see is the set time is 60 minutes. One of the problems I am having is getting the vinyl to wrap around the edge of the panel and being able to be stretched and stick without pulling off after a few minutes.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
I have some extra vinyl from old seat cover and extra sheet metal that I'll test before I try to glue again. I'll buy some of the glues recommended here and will post what I find.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
I used 77 spray on my vinyl and it didn't hold, contact cement by brush is my next try.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Tonight I'm going to Home Depot after work and getting 3M 90, Weldwood contact cement and going to try on spare vinyl and steel to see how they hold. Ill post pics and results. If neither of those work then I'm gonna do the headliner stuff and order the stuff recommended above. I do have worries of the glue sticking in the Arizona heat as well.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
You can't go wrong with High Temp. It is specially formulated for high temps. Being a headliner adhesive, it would have to take high temps, being on the roof of a vehicle. The dry time is quick, I mean in seconds! I always have several cans on hand, it normally takes 2 cans for headliners.
And when I order from yourautotrim.com, I get them within the week.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
So I'm trying to find the instructions for use online for Performance High Temperature Spray Headliner Adhesive but can't seem to find any info. I found one site that said it is good up to 215 degrees which is great. Do you just spray both sides, let it set up then push together? Once you touch the 2 parts together does it hold? I'm thinking about the vinyl that is folded over to the back side.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
I took some pics of the back of the can. Sorry couldn’t get everything to show in one pic. And they are sideways, 😐
But yes, spray both sides. Once it starts getting tacky, which isn’t long, the fabric or vinyl will hold. They only time it won’t, is if your rushing it. But with headliner fabric to the board, it only takes seconds, in my opinion.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Do yourself a favor, if you have an upholstery shop nearby go there and have them use the heated glue. In my past experience nothing off the shelf will last in a car interior.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Well I beg to differ. All they do is charge a ton of money. I would rather know it got done right. I have been headliners for quite a few years, and haven't had any problems yet.

Re: Help with gluing interior vinyl door panels
Ok. So I'm going to order the Hi temp shown above. In the mean time I figured I would do a public service for everyone and try a few other products.
1. 3m 77 no go at all. Doesnt work. Stays sticky and gooey mess on everything and vinyl just falls off with warm garage. 2. 3m headliner glue. Does not work at all gluing vinyl to vinyl. Worked better with vinyl to steel but still peels right off in a rubbery film. 3. JB superweld. Actually looks and smells like super glue. Dries hard like superglue. Vinyl to steel was a strong bond and tore vinyl when removing. Vinyl to vinyl was ok but not real strong. This comes in small quantity and would not be a good option for such a large area. 4. Liquid nails- vinyl to vinyl did not work. Vinyl to steel peeled right off. May buy 3m 90 and complete the waste of money but question will be closer to answering! The 3m headliner may work for the face of the panel and then the jb weld for the foldover part. Once screwed to door may be ok.
