81 K20 Ignition key something broke not the key tumbler broke

My Ignition key tumbler broke or something steering wheel will un lock but something broke inside . Key Just twists,, wont bump starter and wont release column swifter or turn ignition on

Just got towed home and pulling the steering wheel not sure if its just the key lock cylinder or what broke

Any experience this broken problem

P.S. I pulled steering wheel, Turn signal parts and then the key tumbler, but it appears something else is broken down inside the coloums

The auto column shifter wont unlock and key just turns loose like something broke down inside. The steering wheel unlocks so you can turn that though

I have a crappy Haynes manual that doesnt say much kinda worthless

(The rack appears to be coming all the way forward and the steering lock releases)( but auto column shifter stays locked and cant move out of park

Any Ideas or linkes

thanks Rick

If you do take it apart be careful with the bearings they are a pain,if you lose them and expensive too. I lost a couple when I replaced that broken part, so I went to the parts store and it was like 80 bucks for the bearings and retainer.

Looks like I need a pivot pin puller

Where can I get one?

Also need to remove the piviot spring, not sure how yet

Looks like the above picture broken part is the same thing that broke on mine

I have the OTC puller. only like $12 on Amazon. Works like a champ. For the spring, I use a BIG Phillips screwdriver. Push in, turn 1/4 way, let it ease out.

Re: 81 K20 Ignition key something broke not the key tumbler broke

I just finished putting back together. Local auto parts had a Dorman kit and I got the Lisle #19940 pivot pin puller at there also

Bit of a chore

While you are in there you may want to go ahead and look into removing the 4 Torx bolts that commonly come loose and loctite them and tighten them back down. If your steering column is loose these bolts are most likely the culprit.

I just had to do this a few weeks ago. I do it the lazy way and only do 2 of them as it's more to tear apart to get to the other 2. Did it when I first got my truck like 9 years ago and took that long for them to loosen up again. But doesn't look like I put lock right on them first time around
