Who ever said it’s a lot of work
I was talking to few of the members about removing all the rivets in the frame and painting it. They where not kidding it’s major work, cleaning all the pieces is a serious pain. But I’m glad I did cause I found some rust spots under the cross members. If your thinking about it pack your patience, and take the stuff to a professional sandblaster. If your like me and do it yourself your in for some pain

unless you had serious rust you added a ton of work for yourself , How many guys send there 100 point restoration trucks to sand blasting and powder coat without pulling one rivit ?

I’ll begin blasting my frame tomorrow. I’m going to blast it as best as I can leaving the rivets in place and I figure they’ll be okay coated with por15. Is there a major upside to removing them all?

Well hope it works out for you, I found when removed the rear cross member where the rearend is it’s kinda of a combo of three or four pieces I found some pretty serious rust and pitting and you couldn’t tell until it came apart. But I’m a bit OCD

I blasted, primed and painted this frame ,It came out great. Tractor supply matte black with catalyst hardener

Getting 100% coverage, I did that at first and just didn’t like the way it came out so I decided to pull it apart to get every nook and cranny so now I know

I agree with Grumpy... No need to pull all of the rivets unless you can see rust already forming.

Have fun getting that frame back square. I can only imagine the joy that could turn out to be. Im in to see this one come together. I’m sure it will be a real nice foundation for your build.

I've done lots of frames, powdercoated them all, but never pulled a rivet. I figure unless you can REINSTALL rivets, and do them HOT like original, you'll never duplicate the clamping and other features with a simple Grade 8 bolt.
Don't panic though, lots of people have done it in the past. It'll be a lot of work. I'd leave them gold myself, not paint them!

I did it to mine years ago. It's really not that bad I didn't think. Grind of heads and pound out with an air hammer. Pretty quick going. Getting it square isn't too bad either. Heavy truck mechanics change out 1 frame rail all the time. Take measurements and just do it!!

I've used that same paint from ts. Did you use their primer too?

You know its a lot funner if your done it once already.You have a cheat sheet.You know what will be wore out most of the time and you buy extra parts for that one reason.
Most of the guys that get into a 2 build or a 3rd Have bought spare parts.Plus if they are in the junking business or clean up business.They have come across glory holes or stashes of parts and have put there away for other builds or to sell. I know most of you Know what your looking for when you go out looking at trucks.Some are plan parts trucks bent frame Or to much cancer. most of you that have built 1-3 of these trucks just to sell and you driven them off and on for the better part of 15 years.You know what to look for. Plus the tear down is so easy. Until you find the one that is the nightmare Some one has added parts wiring harness that dose not even belongs in the truck Or some one modified thew krap out of the truck. But the guys that have been around a few of these trucks to know what to look for. Plus there are 35 to 40 % of you guys That know what to look for an there tell tells that you an i can pick up on and an know not to even bother unless we are a part out person just looking to make money on striping trucks. |
