Looks like its time for a new wiper motor

Today i was coming home from college for the weekend to go deer hunting. About 15 minutes in to my 90 or so minute trip, my windshield wipers stopped in the mild rain we were having. So, i pulled over and got out to see what was going on. The wipers would move, but get stuck at a certian point. Looking into the cowl, it looke like the wiper motor was loose. So i got under the dash, touched the wiper motor and it was really hot. Almost hot enough to burn my fingers. Since the wipers were a no-go, and the rain was slowing down, i was able to drive the rest of the way home without them with no problems (thank god for rain-x!!!).

Anyway, i gess i will throw in a new wiper motor next week. I have had this problem before, but i put new wiper blades on and it seemed to fix itself, lol. I even price-checked one at O'Reillys (like 51 bucks). Any tips to putting the new one on? I have heard that it is like a 3 hour job laying on your back under the dash. Also, will i have to remove the cowl panel? And if so, how is the cowl panel removed? Can i get it out w/o removing the hood?

it wont take ya 3 hours at least it shouldnt its pretty easy to get to. it sounds to me like your linkage might be binding which coulda caused the motor to burn up. grease or oil the linkage at all the joints and make sure its free. use some pb blaster or lube job do not use wd40

Cowl panels are easy to remove. Just open the hood for access and remove the phillips head screws which retain the cowl panel. If you have nice paint, it may be helpful to have someone help you lift it off (and put it back) to avoid scratching something.

Can't help you on the wiper motor, though.

Yup, and of course remove the wiper arms, and there's a bolt at each end to remove. Real easy job. Dunno about the motor either, but with factory A/C ducting, it looks hard to reach. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Well, i put in the new wiper motor today.

Like you guys said, it was super easy, especially with my non-AC truck. The cowl came off in about 10-15 minutes, i had the whole job done in proably about an hour. Not too bad considering how slow i work

The old motor was only held in with 2 screws, and was loose. So that is proably why it went out....it actually still worked when i took it out, i guess it unlocked itself. But it spun about half as fast as my new motor. The new motor is great....the wipers haul across the windshield. Will defenitly make it easier to drive in a downpour!

Nope...washer pump was extra. Mine didn't work anyway...and i didn't want to pay for a new one so i just left it out

Where did you get the motor and how much was it?

O'Reillys, $45+$15 core charge. Lifetime warranty too...you could proably get a cheaper one from Autozone, but i haven't had the greatest luck with their parts...
