72 Chevy K10 4x4 Starter Question
Hello all,
Think I have spent the last two days reading these forums. Just signed up a few weeks back. This is my first post. I have a freshly built SBC 383 Stroker, Using the original bell housing casting # 3925505, SM465 manual transmission and 205 Transfer case. This has a 168 tooth flywheel and a 12-inch clutch. Question is on the starter. - Starter bolts to bell housing in its three positions Would like to put a high torque starter on. I have read in other posts about being able to install a block mounted starter and it work fine. But it sounded like they had smaller flywheels like 10.5 or 11. So I thought I would ask the question directly. I will be using long tube headers from summit 1-5/8 3" collector. Just trying to get it right the first time as its going to be tight in that area and would like to try and do it right the first time with someone advise that has gone through this already. Any and all suggestions, part numbers, pictures are welcome. Thank you in advance Last edited by Tackleberry; 08-19-2018 at 12:44 PM. Reason: trying to add photo |

Re: 72 Chevy K10 4x4 Starter Question
On my Jimmy I have a non-supported nose gear reduction starter that I put on to replace the bellhousing mount OEM setup. It's been on there nearly 20 years and has been great.
It is a Hitachi style made by CVR but lots of versions out there. You might be able to use a supported nose style, but I didn't want to risk it so went the way I knew would work.
