Any reason I can't use a stock water temp gauge for a trans temp gauge?
Can I use a factory water gauge wired the same way as the water gauge but put a oil sending unit in the transmission and use it to gauge oil temperature? I would have to get a sending unit for oil and not water temp I suppose. What should a th400 run for temp? Is this gauge going to be in the correct temp range for the tranny? Any insight on what sending unit that would be the correct ohms would be appreciated. The gauge is from a square body truck. Thanks in advance.

You asked the question I was in here to ask...What temp does the tranny run? Do some tranny research to find that information and you will answer it yourself.

Ok Maby I'm better to buy this and add a truck gauge face to it or have one made tat appears factory. Ive read 175 f to 225 f at normal operation. This way I can get to higher temperatures and it will still appear factory looking.https://m.ebay.com/itm/1981-1982-COR...UAAOSwsGdaoeUc

This pretty much jives with my limited experience as well. Drove a 2010 Tahoe for several years. It had tranny temp display in the dash if you knew how to find it! Despite high ambient temps and high speeds, the indicated never climbed above 195 that I observed.

I have thought it would be cool to do this in the blank slot on the 7-hole cluster. If anyone works it out I would sure love to hear some details!

That's what I was thinking. Right now I have a vacuum gauge. Not sure how many times I've looked at it and wished a more useful gauge was there. I have a portable one for diagnostic work if I need.

I used same type temp. sender for both and used a toggle switch to send to either sender, worked for me.
