New 2.5 spindles now require a wheel upgrade.

Hi all,

86' 4.5-4 drop.

Got new McGaughy 2.5 drop spindles and found the part of the spindle where the steering ball joint connects to is rubbing the wheel. I ground some of the spindle which cleared the wheel, but not the weight and I do not want to shave the spindle anymore to clear it. I would insert pics, but don't know how.

I can either go with a 1/4" spacer OR go bigger wheels. I was thinking 17". I know this may have been beaten to death, but since I can't take the truck to the shop I was looking for some good numbers for 17" wheels. I was thinking of 8" in front and 9"-10" in back.

Back spacing:

Tire size:

Thanks for any help here guys.

Ground enough to keep spindle form hitting wheel (was not much) and found some stick-on weights at Oreilly's and all ok. Thanks SweetK30

Western Chassis spindles have the steering arm angled back a bit to clear 15" wheels. Never had an issue with those but they are a higher price point than the other options out there.

Just ordered my second set of Western Chassis 2.5” drop spindles to replace the afforementioned spindles, I love them for rally’s and they worked great on my Series 62 Wheel Vintiques! Thanks Mike

Re: New 2.5 spindles now require a wheel upgrade.

Well hell, guess I should have paid a little more. I did a little grinding and the wheels now clear the wheel, but the righ wheel still makes contact with the cop lower control arm at the very bottom. I don’t want to grind that so now I will be going to 17s.

This really pisses me off!!

So, what is good backspacing for 17x8 and 17x9-10 wheels??
