3800 1 ton long bed
Project build 3800 1 ton 9ft bed. Looking for tires 7:50 x 17
We started this project last fall and now have the frame well on its way to completion. We want to order some new tires but don't know where to find them. All suspension parts are rebuilt, painted and reassembled. All parts will soon be mounted and we will have a rolling chassis. Last edited by bootman49; 09-01-2018 at 11:07 PM. |

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
9 foot beds are so crazy long, the first time I saw one I was stumped, I thought someone had lengthened it

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
One of my greatest regrets is selling my 54 3800 long bed truck.
Anyhow, STA tires have a 7.50-17 tube type tire. They are steer type tread, not traction tread though. Tornel makes a traction type and steer type tire. Any way you go is going to be expensive. Firestone Transforce come in 225 and 235 width, you need at least a 6 “ wide rim. Last edited by whitedog76; 09-09-2018 at 01:48 AM. |

Try Diamondback tires too. They have a lot of late model tires with whitewalls, they can also vulcanize a whitewall on any tire you want.

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
I rebuilt one back in 2014-2016...it was so long it just barely fit in my garage....I sold it to a guy with a bigger garage than me...they are fun old trucks to tinker with....
I love the looks of the stock stuff. Any upgrades planned? MikeC

It's my brothers truck and he wants as close to stock as can be. Only change he wanted was white walls and he did allow me to swap out the 514 to a 411 gear. I wish he would let me do a disc brake job on the front of this thing. Here's another pic of disassembly. |

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
I did the 4.10 gear swap and the disc brakes too. I was still only able to get it up to 53 mph...foot flat on the floor too...I had my wife follow me with her 2007 HHR...that was all we got out of him...still is time warp for sure...he might change his mind one he drives it...

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
I remember yours mike!
I think money would be better spent on leaf springs and rear gearing than whitewalls. if you can buy them all then do it, but a one ton longbed will ride like it has square wheels unloaded, and 17x7.50 whitewalls will not soften the ride nor increase top speed. I heard on those one ton leaf packs you can pull a lot of leafs out and it rides a lot better without lowering it. I also recommend new wheels, 16 inch whitewalls are a lot easier to find and if you change to 16" wheels you will do away with the widowmaker rims. my 47 was a 1 ton grain truck when I started, the story was the guy was fixing it up and a rear tire always went flat, he was filling it with air one day and the bead lock let go, and forced his hand up through one of the stake pockets!

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
Thanks guy's. Perhaps as time goes on he may change his mind. We have talked about the bone jarring ride he will have.
On a separate project that I have. 1955 LCF 18,000gvw V-8 56,000mi Good running truck. I was going to build a ramp/car hauler bed type setup but tooo many projects for the bank account. I cant find another one like it on here for asking price comparison. I am looking to move it in order to finish another project. |

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
Ran into a bit of a snag with the 1949 3800 truck. I need to replace the front inner bearings, race and seals.
Is there a link that has a parts list for these older trucks? And where is the best place to buy bearings? Thanks |

Re: 3800 1 ton long bed
If I still had my 3800 truck with the stock stuff up front...I would take the bearings off the drum and get the numbers off of them and do a google search or maybe a Timken website might also help.
Just a thought...your local NAPA might be able to cross reference the numbers once you have them in your hand. Good luck MikeC check these out here... https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail...Ton_1_Ton.html

Thanks for reply, No visible part numbers. NAPA didn't have any listing for front hub bearings. Perhaps if I could find GM part numbers for a 3800 hub assembly? Will try your link. |
