Anyone Running A Front Receiver On Their '67-'72?

So I am thinking of adding a front receiver on my '67 'Burb. I like the idea of a hidden unit with a flip down front license plate frame. Have any of you guys added one or saw one? Im fairly confident I will have to build it myself unless their are other options I am not aware of. How 'bout it?

I have not seen one, but if you can find a old receiver style hitch you could fab one up pretty easy, I have one on my bush buggy, works fantastic to move trailers around the property.

I fabbed one up for my Blazer. It's welded to the winch mounting plate that I have behind my front bumper. Use it for moving my boat trailer around.

Im thinking I would use it more as an anchor point for a narrow overhead rack that would utilize the rear receiver as well. Im basicly looking for a way to haul 20' lumber or 16' siding without a gutter mount or bumper mount on my Suburban. Its not something I would use that often so the idea of a quick install and removal is appealing.

Like you guys mentioned though it would be super handy for parking trailers in tight places.

Re: Anyone Running A Front Receiver On Their '67-'72?

I have this type of setup on my '02 GMC but it's not centered. I have a B&W class V hitch that replaced the GM one. It bolts together and I fabbed a receiver to bolt to the side.

On the front I have a pair of receivers that replaced the OEM tow hooks. They were made by LEED Engineering but I don't think they make them any more. I made attachments from 1/8" wall 2" tube that look similar to the RawsonKoening headache rack on my truck.

The front receiver and its corresponding attachment combined with the headache rack let you haul 12' or longer material. The rear lets you put 8' and up stuff on it. Or you can use the front and the rear along with the headache rack for 20' + material. My truck is an extended cab short bed and the distance between the racks is 19'6".

This has been amazingly useful and with it offset I can still pull a trailer in addition to hauling the material. Or a canoe, kayak, etc. on the rack.

Re: Anyone Running A Front Receiver On Their '67-'72?

I'm going to pick up some roll bar tubing when it comes in and will use the setup to get it home. I will shoot some pics and try to find this thread to add to.
Should be here either tomorrow or first of next week.

Re: Anyone Running A Front Receiver On Their '67-'72?

JC Witney used to sell them. I bought one that did not quite fit so I sorted it out and then made up a flip down licence plate that was actually 3/8ths plate steel. it was good at hiding the front hitch and made for an excellent sturdy step up to gain access to the engine compartment.

Very nice fabwork. I like that you even made a place to hook the straps to. Thanks, gives me ideas.

Re: Anyone Running A Front Receiver On Their '67-'72?

Thanks. It works great.

Vertical load limit on the 2” .125 was something like 500#, so between the 3 it should be able to carry that much with a 3x safety factor. I may add some sort of anti-wobble pin that screws in to minimize sway due to the tolerance in the 3/16” wall 2 1/2” tube ID and the 2” OD.

It is amazingly useful. For tube or even other metal sticks I wish it had a “V” head on the end instead of flat, but for lumber, ladders, or canoes the flat is best. Great to able to pick up a lighter load without having to drag the trailer out.

FYI, those are just over 22’ long sticks of DOM.
