Power steering only works turning left

I had a pretty bad leak at the input shaft seal in my 1969 c10 so I thought that would be an easy fix. Instead when I went to pull out the stub shaft the worm gear came with it so I had to redo the whole thing. I thought I had got it all back together right but now it only works when turning right and there is about a 1/4 play in the wheel. I have a good idea of whats going on inside there now so could someone please tell me what I could have possibly done wrong? Thanks in advance.

The 2 different sized balls have to alternate if you have had them out.

Do you mean all of those little bearings are different sizes?

How many threads of the adjuster plug are showing beyond the big nut? There should only be about 1-1.5

If you have more than it is not assembled properly. Most likely is the spool valve is not aligned with the pin.

Did you take it completely apart? None of the bearings dropped out after the worm gear was installed?

Re: Power steering only works turning left

It is then most likely the spool valve i guess because I remember when I took it apart that spool with the holes in it fell out and I just tapped it back in. Although the notch did line up on the top of the worm gear shaft and stub shaft. So ill see what happens when I get time to take it apart this weekend. For the play I punched holes into it where it was before and lined it up again so i'm pretty sure that's not where the play is coming from

Why not just grab a rebuilt gear and slap it in the old girl?

Steering gears and brake systems...two systems you should never short cut parts wide...

Just my 2 cents worth...

I think that was grumpy old man shooting at me. I thought the unit was recirculating ball type.

Roundy rounds are the best! Unless it's a bunch of Left Turn Indy racers.
