power steering swap question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am in the process of doing this swap..my question is, will it hurt to drive w/ the power steering box installed w/o the pump...until I receive the pump in the mail...Had a nice enough weekend that the concrete floor in the garage was warm enough to swap the boxes...just wondering if driving it this way would harm anything ??

I have done this once for quite a while on a 40 chevy sedan I had, had a newer power box but couldnt do the pump right away, ran the hose back into itself and steered it manual for a year or so, I am sure this isnt the way to go, but it steered it.

A Buddy of mine did it with his Camaro for quite a while...didn't hurt it.

But you will have to have your tailor resize your shirts,if you have a little diameter steering wheel, because your forarms and bicepts will grow enormus.LOL

its probably 3 times harder to turn a power steering box without the help of the pump and fluid as it is a manual box.. you can drive it but i personally wouldnt unless your going to enjoy the workout. even on the highway it can be tough to turn

You may get PS fluid all over everything if it the old gearbox was in use recently. I had a mess just pushing/steering my truck in and out of my garage last sping with the PS hoses off.

You shouldn't have any problems with the exception of trying to park it. (the aformentioned bucept deal)
Being a 68, did the frame have the dimple for the steering gear box, or did you use spacers?
If you used spacers, you oughta rip it back off and dimple the frame so you can mount it properly.
