Has my ac been updated?

Just got a 1972 Chevy
Looking to see if this ac system has been updated?
Did not get much info on the ac system from previous owner
Looks like it has a updated high side charge port
But the low side still has the old r12 port

Here are some photos

It has the connectors for R-134 refrigerant installed. So, probably updated.

I'd say it's been updated, it has a Sanden compressor. I'd suspect whoever did it just used an a/c machine and charged it thru the HI side.
How's it cool?

Right now it’s dead not cold!
I unscrewed the high side cap and screwed it back on and the threads wento to far in and drained the system so I am looking to recharge it

I didn’t want to stick 134a in but it did look updated and the previous owner said it was

The adapter that you unscrewed should not be taken off. The proper connector on the hose should be used for charging.

Also, an AC system cannot be charged through the high side port.

Yep I got new connector and covers and will be recharging through the low side

Using an a/c machine it will charge thru the high side with the compressor off. Our Robinair at work defaults to hi side charge. I usually switch it over, just in case the machine is hot or slow and won’t put in that last couple of ounces.

But.... yes you only charge thru the low side with the compressor on.

Let us know how it cools when you get it going. I wonder if the PO adjusted the POA for 134?

I’ll find out today, it worked until a few days ago I think it was my fault it leaked out
So I got new seal to install on the high side plug and a adapter to fill from the low side

How do I tell if the poa has been adjusted?

If it has been adjusted your low side pressure will be around 26. If not, it will be around 30.

I got a can of 134a with a regulator on it
Do these fill like a normal vehicle or do they take less pressure

If it looks like the cans I use, that is a pressure gauge that will let you know the low side pressure during charging. It shows blue/green/red, right? You may need to put the can in a pan of warm water to help drive all the refrigerant out of it. Just watch that you don't run the pressure too high when you are doing it.

That’s what I got
I got it into the green and seems to be working great again
Now to find out if it’ll last or there is a leak elsewhere

Did you pull a vacuum or just plug that can into the port and open the valve?

Sounds like you somehow got it working again without the vacuum step!

EDIT: I've done this myself with the quick-top-up kits and using the warm water to get 'em to go in... etc, but never on a system that's been completely exposed/opened up.

I didn’t vacuum it, I plan to do so, I’m more interested to see if it holds charge and the seal I replaced was the leak

Back in the days before all the controls were placed on refrigerant use, we were allowed to purge the system of air by performing a "sweep". This involved charging the system with a pound or so of refrigerant and then bleeding it off. The result was a reduction in air in the system simply because there was more refrigerant in the system. Back when you could get a can for 88¢ it might have made a little sense. I never did that, though. At the time, 88¢ was still quite a bit of money to me. I have a vacuum pump, anyway.
