I am looking at a 1970 truck it has 6 lugs is this a 3/4 or 1/2

All 67-70 1/2 tons are 6 lug. Went to 5 lug and disks in 71.

Ahh, My 69 has 5 lugs. It is a Disc conversion on the front but I just assumed they where all 5 lug. I never imagined that they did a rear end swap too, or can they just swap axles in the rear.

67-69 used a slightly narrower rear end than 70-72. It is likely your rear was swapped out. 70 is the only year you can swap axles for the 71/72 5 lug variety

Does it matter if the truck was a V8 or a I6. My 69 was orginally a I6. Everything in the back is very tight and rusty. It seems orginal from the factory but you can never be sure.

No, but what I said about 67-69 rears being slightly narrower is a generality. Who's to say that some 69's didn't have the wider rear, or someone may have made to 71/72 axles fit your axle tube? No telling.

If you can find the stamped code on the axle tube it may help identify your rear end.

To retro 5 lug axle into 6 lug, you have to enlist a machine shop to shorten the 5 lug axle. Last quote I got was about 45 bucks each.

a 3/8 (or so) inch spacer can be used to install a 5 lug axle shaft in and retain the old wide rear end.
Or a conversion coulda been done and driven through Ohio once in Feb...the show and salt wiall caus scaley rust almost instantly.

chevys had 6 lugs from almost the beginning of trucks till 1970 after that half tons were 5 lug, unless they were a 4x4 they stayed 6 lug till well, they still are six lug come to think of it, but the new 6 lugs have different back spacing etc....

on older trucks, Internationals was the only truck maker that offered 6 lug 3/4 tons, up to and including 1968 models (who knows why, though). In '69 they started 8 lug like everyone else.
then GM started making the 'wimpy' 6 lug 3/4 tons in the '88 up body style.
